Cagneys Steakhouse & Wine Bar
By YP Contributor

Located in one of Mississauga’s most desirable neighbourhoods, Cagneys has been a fixture in Streetsville for the last 40 years. After opening its doors in 1974, the family-owned eatery, famous for its Caesar salad, steak and ribs, has been wowing customers with its commitment to fresh, delicious food and attentive, courteous service.

Arriving at the restaurant, I do a double take.

“This isn’t the Cagneys I remember,” I state, taking in the newly renovated restaurant.

Co-owner Alexander Lassos (son of one of the restaurant’s original owners, Gus Lassos) has been hard at work, reimaging the restaurant to a more upscale space reminiscent of establishments in the downtown core. With muted, elegant lighting, contemporary seating and bar service worthy of a nightclub, the new Cagneys is polished and posh – an urban oasis in the heart of the suburbs.

I observe Alexander with his guests. He is charming, accommodating and agreeable – the exact behaviours one would expect to encounter from the owner of a family run operation. His patrons are relaxed, at home in the restaurant, and from all accounts, enjoying items from the new gourmet menu.

Customer favourites include, but are not limited to, Salmon (crispy skin salmon, shaved heirloom carrots, chorizo hash, watermelon gazpacho), Pescatore Pasta (scallops, salmon, mussels, jumbo tiger shrimp, linguine noodles in a seafood broth), Rack of Lamb (rack of lamb, garam masala, heirloom carrots, smashed potatoes) and Stuffed Chicken Supreme (pesto, aged cheddar, purple crushed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, mushroom jus).

My tummy rumbles as I peruse the dinner menu. And even though the Butternut Squash Ravioli is calling my name, I decide to pay homage to the Cagneys of my youth (circa 1992) and order Cagneys Famous Chicken Caesar. It is just as good as I remembered. No, that’s not true. It’s even better.

Cagneys is open daily. Visit mid-week for “Wine Down Wednesdays” and live jazz on Thursday nights from 7:00pm to 11:00pm.
