Highlighting Local Ontario Artists

Perhaps it was coincidence, perhaps it was fate, but three Port Perry artists independently had the same idea back in 2005: a year-round gallery that focuses on Ontario art and artists. “It was quite serendipitous, actually,” one of the founders, Birgitta MacLeod, says. “We’re all artists and all had the same idea. There’s a very popular art tour that happens every year in Port Perry, but no place that’s open year-round that features local artists.” To remedy this Birgitta and her fellow founders Bonnie Thomson and Jennifer Hardie opened Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery.

One particular point of pride for Birgitta and her partners is Meta4’s focus on Ontario artists. “I don’t think any gallery has such a focus on this province’s many talented artists,” Birgitta says, “many galleries emphasize or deal exclusively with Canadian art, but we’re all about what Ontario has to offer.” Nowadays, Meta4 showcases over 130 artists all from Ontario.

Hand-Crafted Pottery, Paintings, Sculptures and More

The offerings at Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery vary as artists create and showcase their creations. “Pottery’s a big seller for us; it’s so beautiful, but still functional,” Birgitta says. “Blown and fused glass is also functional and beautiful, and we also sell jewellery, paintings, sculptures and woodworking.”

“We usually work on consignment,” notes Birgitta. “Everything that’s displayed goes through a very careful review by the three owners. We want to make sure the pieces artists want to sell at our gallery match our clientele, but we want to make sure Meta4’s the best place for their work as well. There’s lots of great art out there that our gallery isn’t the best place for, so we try and direct those people to other, more suitable places.”

Artist Workshops for Adults and Kids

Besides showcasing current Ontario artists, Birgitta and her partners are also actively involved in making new ones through their workshops and classes. “We offer classes for kids and adults,” Birgitta explains, “we’ve taught all sorts of art in the gallery, really whatever the space can allow.” Past classes have included glass fusion, painting, potting and much more. And for kids who want to learn more about art and creative expression, the gallery holds an annual spring art camp in March.

The classes and gallery showings may help develop artists, but they also develop a community of art lovers, something Birgitta confesses is one of her favourite aspects of Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery. “I love sharing beautiful, exceptional things with other people and all of the creative experiences we have together.”
