A boutique ice cream experience

Brett Young and her fiancée had plenty of inspiration to follow their passion and open up their own ice cream shop. Brett herself spent several years running her own business, while he came from a family that owned an ice cream shop in Ontario’s Muskoka region. It was only a matter of time before they naturally combined their know-how to make their dream a reality.

“My fiancée had talked about opening up a shop for year; we knew that we wanted to be in The Beaches. When we found this space, we thought it was the perfect location and the right time,” says Brett. Located steps from both Woodbine Park and Ashbridges Bay, Brett’s Ice Cream opened in May 2017, and has quickly become a beloved neighbourhood hotspot.

What's the scoop?

Transforming the space that was once home to an Indian restaurant took three months. Brett and her fiancée worked together to change the colour palette, install new flooring and generally freshen up the dining area. The result is a simple, clean look, with plenty of white and pink accents. Along with a vintage gum ball machine that still accepts nickels, there’s a fun ‘What’s The Scoop’ neon sign that adorns the west wall and a playful hand-painted cone art piece on the east wall.

“It’s definitely spacious and intimate with a focus on family-style – kid-friendly with benches and outdoor seating. I really wanted the shop to feel open and ideal for moms who want to bring in their baby strollers and have ease of movement for both them and the kids,” says Brett.

Come and sit awhile

With so many ice cream shops in and around The Beaches, Brett knew that she had to distinguish herself from the others. “We wanted to provide more of a boutique experience, somewhere where people could sit and enjoy our ice cream,” says Brett. She’s done that by offering a comfortable space for people and offering a product that is second to none.

Here, you’ll find iced coffees and teas, sundaes and ice cream, but you’ll also find various vegan sorbets including avocado-lime and several frozen yogurts like blackberry earl grey. They’re topped with healthier options including coconut chips and berries. There’s also a spinoff of the traditional milkshake which combines sorbet and soda with fresh fruit.

Cup or cone?

With flavours like Scotch whisky, lemon prosecco and apple crumble, Brett has certainly made it a point to serve flavours that are a bit different, eccentric and more exotic than you’d find elsewhere. There are 16 on offer at all times (all peanut-free, with dairy and gluten-free options) and they change periodically, but the staples continue to be the cinnamon bun ice cream and the  chocolate dip strawberry.

“Our ice cream itself is all natural with zero preservatives, no colouring, no additives,” ensures Brett. You can enjoy a very generous scoop in a cup, or take it to the next level by putting it in a specialty cone. Inspired by ice cream shops in New York, Brett offers up to 10 different cone flavours that are hand-made in Brooklyn, including the cake batter cone, which is easily one of the most popular ones.

Ice cream dreams

So what type of experience can you expect to have at Brett’s Ice Cream? “I just want people to try as many flavours as they like and understand that there are several options available for everyone, including gluten-free cones,” says Brett, who adds, “everyone is welcomed and everyone can enjoy a scoop and a cone without compromising quality and flavour.”
