Bumpkins Restaurant

A Neighbourhood Tradition

Originally opened in 1971 at Parliament and Wellesley, Bumpkins now sits at its current location on Gloucester Street in a converted mansion. Tucked away on a quiet residential street, the neighbourhood restaurant has a strong history as a popular destination for local diners. The multi-purpose space also caters to larger groups, corporate events and private dinner parties.

With a cozy-yet-elegant atmosphere, Bumpkins is a favourite among Toronto politicians and high profile diners but still remains a comfortable, welcoming place for neighbouring residents. The entire restaurant was renovated in 2012 and now features a large, sophisticated dining room adorned with crystal chandeliers and a marble fireplace. The front lounge space is marked with cozy armchairs and is designed as a separate area to enjoy a cocktail before or after dinner.

Our philosophy has always been that no matter how much the customer is spending, they be treated as royalty. I’ve learned over our years of service that the customer is always king or queen. - Min Ma, co-owner

A Place to Celebrate

It’s clear that Bumpkins’ co-owner Min Ma is passionate about the restaurant and its historic roots in the area. “Many people keep coming back, even those who have moved away from Toronto,” says Min proudly. “People love coming here for special occasions and I think it’s because we offer something for everyone.” The restaurant’s French continental menu boasts a lengthy and diverse list of entrees that includes rack of lamb, chicken parmigiana, prime rib and seven distinct pasta dishes. Diners can also opt for the affordable prix fixe dinner option, which provides efficient service and a variety of choice.

Bumpkins offers two large event spaces on the top floor of the building, including an upper level fireside lounge along with a banquet area with adjacent meeting room space. “We take pride in personally consulting with our guests depending on what they are celebrating and if they need help with the planning process,” explains Min.

“We are very flexible and understand that not everyone has a lot of money to spend. I think we sometimes surprise people with our reasonable prices…I want that to show that everyone is welcome,” says Min. “We accommodate people regardless of their budget, because each customer is just as important as the last.”

Personalized Service and Value

Min has always remained an important face of Bumpkins, serving customers personally since he took ownership of the restaurant in 2000. “Amazingly, we have still been going strong in an area where many restaurants open and close,” he says. Part of the restaurant’s success can definitely be attributed to Min’s commitment to personalized service and attention to detail, but he also credits his kitchen and wait staff for their knowledgeable service and teamwork.

“I naturally like people, so it is important for me personally to serve those who come into our restaurant, and I think that sets an example for our staff as well,” says Min. “I care very much about the customer experience and that people are getting a great value for their money when they come here. Our philosophy has always been that no matter how much the customer is spending, they be treated as royalty. I’ve learned over our years of service that the customer is always king or queen.”
