Improving Customer Service on the Front Lines

Before Omar Barakzay became the owner of Burger Shoppe, he was already a fan of the joint’s fresh, delicious burgers. The original owner, Saeed Mohamed, opened the shop in 2007 and Omar took over in 2012, looking for a change from his work in airport security. Omar was careful about maintaining Burger Shoppe’s well-loved brand and improving its standards. He swapped the existing seating for wooden tables with vintage-inspired chairs and added bar tables by the windows, nearly doubling seating. He also hung framed vintage magazine advertisements on the walls to create a retro-diner feel.

But he placed the greatest emphasis on improving customer service by being present on the front lines of the eatery. “You can make decisions right away — you make sure the customer is happy,” Omar says. “If they say, for example, ‘you gave me less fries,’ then I go, ‘Okay, you can have more fries. Or you can grab a drink on me.’” Being open to and present for customer feedback is part of what helped Omar keep his finances out of the red. “When I started this, I thought I was going to lose money — that I have to accept the loss. So when the first year went by I was shocked that I didn’t lose anything.”

Quality Meat from Small Ontario Farms

Surely part of what helped Omar and Burger Shoppe succeed after the change in ownership was improving an already known and well-loved product. “The meat is fresh and real, nothing is frozen,” Omar says. “We get it from small, local farms in Ontario.” And the freshness factor doesn’t stop at the meat: “We make our own French fries fresh, every day. And we have the best onion rings in the city. They’re not small, tiny ones. They’re really good.”

The best way to taste it all, Omar says, is The Riverside, one of Burger Shoppe’s best sellers and their signature burger – a nod to the shop’s home neighbourhood. A six-ounce patty of naturally-raised beef is topped with mozzarella, bacon, an extra-thick homemade onion ring, tomato, lettuce, garlic aioli and BQM BBQ sauce.

A Great Community in Riverside

The Riverside Burger represents all the positive additions to this changing community. “If you came here five years ago, it was almost like a ghost town,” Omar says. “There was not too much happening.” Recently, however, Omar has seen plenty of great businesses and shops become established in the neighbourhood, along with younger families and young professionals making a home in Riverside, creating a cozy community that Omar, a Mississauga resident, loves to work in every day. “I love this part of the city. This place has given me so much.”
