Granite Brewery & Restaurant

All in the Family

In Canada’s largest city, where everyone walks fast, talks fast and even eats fast, the local pub is a welcome refuge from the daily grind. Granite Brewery is that small slice of sanity in North Toronto.

A family friendly British-style pub, Granite Brewery has been packing them in since 1991 when veteran pub master Ron Keefe first opened its doors for business. Not only is it family friendly, it’s family operated. Ron’s son Sam (pictured above) is the marketing manager, while Sam’s sister and brother are the brewers.

To explain why Granite Brewery is so popular, Sam sums it up in two words: great beer. Proud of the fact that they’ve been making craft beers long before they became trendy, Sam points out that with 14 beers on tap and 25 beer recipes regularly brewed, the neighbourhood brew pub has attracted a loyal following of customers for over two decades. Pretty impressive given that the immediate area boats a half dozen other English themed pubs.

Cheers! To Award-Winning Beers

Yet it’s more than just longevity and suds selection that make Granite Brewery a beer drinker’s destination. It’s the traditional English style brewing process they use. Prepared in huge vats located in the main dining room, the beer is made in an open fermentation process with no preservatives. This is a unique brewing style not commonly used by Ontario craft brewers. Using open fermentation, Granite Brewery has established itself as a leader in cask conditioned ales. That might explain why its Hopping Mad ale has won the Golden Tap Award for Best Cask Conditioned Ale in Ontario five years in a row. And if you’re looking to enjoy the hand-crafted beers at home, the on site retail store sells growlers, kegs and other merchandise seven days a week.

Award winning beer deserves an equally rewarding meal, which is why the brewpub also offers a great tasting menu. “I recommend the stout burger,” says Sam, “with stout beer added to the barbecue sauce. Or one of the curry dishes paired with an IPA. Or chicken wings.”

And while casual is the operative word here, so is celebratory. Weddings are a big part of the Keefe family’s business thanks to the ample outdoor courtyard, which hosts many a warm weather special occasion. “That’s why the pub is booked with weekend weddings all summer long,” Sam points out.

One last reason for its enduring popularity? Granite Brewery is an accessible pub with free underground parking, which makes it a major draw for anyone with mobility restrictions. Indeed, the emphasis on inclusion pretty much sums up the spirit and philosophy of the pub — a place where everyone is made to feel welcome and at home every day and in every way.
