A Cabbagetown Diner That Has It All

Whatever time of the day you visit, Johnny G's Café has something to satisfy you. "We have a full menu; we cover breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there's always something flavourful cooking for our customers" says Dimitra Kotzia, the entrepreneur behind the successful Cabbagetown diner. "Our breakfasts are very sought out, morning is pretty much the busiest time of the day for us. But we do serve breakfast all day long, so you don't have to be a morning person to enjoy what our kitchen churns out," she adds.

Johnny G's Café offers classic diner fare along with daily specials for its patrons. Dimitra and her kitchen team also love to bring some typically Greek flavours into the mix. "I'm Greek myself, and Greek cuisine is very fresh and tasty; it’s a great addition to our menu. We love playing with the flavours, mixing them up in a coherent fashion."

Alongside its popular breakfast and weekend brunches, you’ll find fresh and flavourful burgers, souvlaki, gyros, roasted potatoes with chicken, and pork chops on Johnny G's Café's menu; there's definitely a convergence of Greek and Canadian influences happening here, to the benefit of Cabbagetown's gourmands.

From The Stage To The Kitchen

Owning and operating a successful café is Dimitra's second career, a dream she realized after having stepped out of the spotlight. "I used to be a professional singer,” she explains, “a career that brought me to sing in many different countries and cities. I've been virtually everywhere, tasted a lot of foods and got acquainted with many culinary traditions doing so."

Feeling the need to settle down, she moved from Greece to Toronto in 2001. "I've always had this entrepreneurial spirit within me, I knew that I wanted to open a restaurant one day, and ultimately, a nightclub. But I needed to gather some experience first, as I was not very familiar with Canadian cuisine and food culture. My friend had this café, so I started working there as a way to refine my skills and learn about food here. Two years in, I ended up purchasing the café; Johnny G's as we know it today was born."

Laid-Back Ambiance, Loyal Patrons

Today, even though she still enjoys a huge following both in Toronto and Greece thanks to her singing days, Dimitra concentrates on making Johnny G's Café a warm and welcoming place where one can enjoy knock-your-socks-off breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

"It's a whole different way of life, but I love it so much. I get great feedback from the customers; they love the meals we cook up for them and they enjoy the place's ambiance and welcoming vibe.” A vibe which is supported by Dimitra’s dedicated employees: “Customers always have a good word about the service,” she notes, “the waiting staff is very approachable, and that's part of the café's charm, I think."
