A Family Business

Matthew Masciangelo didn’t know a thing about fashion until he started working with his uncle, Lou Myles; fortunately for him, he couldn’t have found a better mentor. A master tailor, Lou’s outfitted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and O.J. Simpson with bespoke suits, painstakingly hand-stitched garments crafted exactly to the customer’s requests.

Matthew got his first glimpse of the trade from Lou’s workshop and shortly thereafter, a new tailor was born. “I fell in love with it,” he says. So much so, that after a four-year apprenticeship, he took what he’d learned and founded Masciangelo Design in October 2010, his own high-end clothier. Working hand-in-hand with Ameer Ali, executive vice-president and assistant designer, Matthew creates custom suits, blazers, sport jackets, overcoats, trousers, jeans, shirts, tuxedos, vests and accessories for both men and women.

We believe that when you wear a suit that fits you well and you like everything about it... that you project confidence and power. - Matthew Masciangelo, CEO

An Underground Tailor

You won’t find Masciangelo Design’s regular hours of operation listed anywhere. That’s because there aren’t any. Matthew and Ameer open by appointment only, either hosting clients at their upscale Yorkville studio or visiting them pretty much anywhere else. “It’s just a more intimate setup,” explains Matthew, who refers to himself as an “underground tailor,” a nod to the fact that he doesn’t run a typical walk-in bricks-and-mortar store.

Working this way, the two tailors have visited executives at their offices, been welcomed into their share of households and once even visited a judge at a courthouse. It’s not unheard of for Matthew to personally drop a unique suit off just hours before a client catches a flight out of town or meet for a fitting a day before a new suit is needed for a big occasion. Typically, though, making a suit from scratch takes one month, but there are exceptions. “If someone’s in a big rush and has a big important event, then we do what we gotta do to get it done,” says Matthew.

A Perfect Fit

A customer’s suit-fitting session at the Masciangelo Design studio begins with an all-important question: “First, we ask them if they want a scotch, wine or Perrier, just to make them feel comfortable,” says Matthew.

Next, he and Ameer pick their client’s brain to find out what they do for a living and what the rest of their wardrobe is like, going beyond simply taking measurements to create a truly perfect fit for them. “If he’s a lawyer, you recommend a certain fabric based on his needs. If he travels every day, always out of town, you would recommend a fabric that wrinkles less than other fabrics,” Matthew notes.

What that garment will eventually cost varies greatly. Pricing for a bespoke suit starts at $1,400, but the most expensive one Matthew’s created to date went for a cool $20,000. It all depends on the materials, which can be almost anything a client dreams up. “We did a few gold suits with 22-karat gold in the actual stripe going down,” he recalls.

Proving the Power of Clothing

One idea at the very core of Masciangelo Design is that clothing is power. “We believe that when you wear a suit that fits you well and you like everything about it — you like the way you feel in it — that you project confidence and power,” explains Matthew. It’s a conclusion he’s based from feedback from customers, like a lawyer who’d never received a compliment on his clothing before donning  a Masciangelo Design suit. “I’m proud of how our clients feel,” Matthew says.

To Ameer, responses like that make all the hard work worthwhile. That, or "If we help someone out with their wedding, and making their dream suits, those are memories that are going to last a lifetime for them,” he says. “That’s really rewarding, just the end result.”
