Where Great Service is the Goal

The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won a Stanley Cup, in 1967, the Arcadi family was already dealing in hockey gear.

Nearly half a century later, much has changed for the Arcadis: What started as a modest repair operation in the family home has turned into a pair of adjoining retail outlets — Toronto Hockey Repair and Goalie Heaven — two blocks west of Toronto's Dundas West subway station. The Bloor Street West location opened in 1999, and eventually expanded into the unit next door.

What hasn't changed, however, is Toronto Hockey Repair's commitment to personal, quality service. "You might find cheaper prices at big retailers, but you're not going to get a proper fitting," says owner Jim Arcadi. "That's where we come in. It's time-consuming to get it right, but we always want to make sure everyone is happy and properly fitted."

Gear for Pros and Rookies

It’s no wonder former NHL goalies Curtis Joseph and Ed Belfour, among other pro players such as Phil Kessel and James Van Riemsdyk, have had work done at Toronto Hockey Repair.

Not only does the business offer a stunning array of repair and maintenance services — from skate sharpening and blade replacement to glove re-palming and re-lacing — but its 4,000 square feet of showroom space contains every piece of hockey gear imaginable. Hockey players will of course find basics like skates, sticks, pucks and pads, but also custom equipment bags, referee jerseys, ankle guards and much more.

Brands, meanwhile, run from well-known names such as Bauer and CCM to rarities like Muskoka Sticks and Freddy Fresh Puck. The store also sells lacrosse and baseball equipment, and offers repair services to match.

Helping When Needed

Not everyone earns an NHL-sized paycheck, of course, so there's a range of price points at Toronto Hockey Repair. Every fall, Arcadi says, "We outfit kids just starting hockey from head to toe," with some parents choosing the store's quality used items.s

But because it's a family business, Arcadi says staff can give customers a break. "If someone says, 'Things are a little tight, can you do something for me?' well, we can. Clerks at the big-box store have little or no discretion on pricing, but we do."

It's no wonder customers are so loyal. "Some of them have been coming here since mom was at the house," Arcadi says. "And we keep getting new customers, too, and they keep coming back."

Now, if only the Leafs could be as consistent over the years as Toronto Hockey Repair.
