Aux 33 Tours

Montreal's Largest Vinyl Record Store is Born

When he got his first KISS album at age seven, Pierre Markotanyos fell in love with music. He began collecting records and learning to play multiple instruments. By age 12, he’d not only built a massive collection of albums, but was also performing in a band. To set his passion for music on a solid foundation, he completed a bachelors degree in administration with the hopes of opening his own record store.

By 2007, he’d accumulated a whopping 350,000 records. After a lengthy search for a commercial space, Aux 33 Tours opened on April 1 of that year in a conservative locale on  Mount Royal Avenue to offer music enthusiasts a place to get their favourite records and CDs, new or used. A couple of years later, the shop moved right next door to a space double the size to fit its immense selection of products.

Back then, about half the store was devoted to CDs and the other half to vinyl records, but as the CD business declined, Pierre shifted the store's focus to vinyl records. That decision would soon make Aux 33 Tours Montreal's largest vinyl record store. “When the CD business went down, we focused on vinyl, which was my first love anyway,” says Pierre.

Thousands of Albums Under One Roof

At any given time, the shelves at Aux 33 Tours hold some 80,000 vinyl titles, with a gigantic selection of new and used albums from nearly every genre imaginable. From rock, pop, jazz and classical, to metal, funk and soul, Aux 33 Tours has that much-awaited new release and those hard-to-find collector’s items, and in impressive condition, too. If they don't have what you want, pop over to the special orders counter, because they probably know where to get it.

In an age when virtually every song and album is available instantly via digital download, Aux 33 Tours’ success is evidence that records are still hot sellers. "Our customers want something tangible that they can see and feel," explains Pierre. "There's a whole experience that comes with vinyl, from the look of the album artwork to the touch and feel of playing a record on a real turntable."

In addition to a regular selection of classic turntables to play your beloved vinyls, Aux 33 Tours has also made a name for itself as the only place in Montreal with a room fully dedicated to 45s (seven-inch singles), offering nearly 20,000 of them for sale. And CD lovers need not fear, because the shop has about 10,000 second-hand disks waiting to be scooped up.

Customers rave about how well-organized the store is and how easy it is to peruse and find what they're looking for, a fact that’s no accident. To bring the store to life according to his vision, Pierre travelled to Europe, Asia and the US, visiting record shop after record shop for inspiration. “I visited shops with records that were racked sideways where it was tough to sift through and find what you wanted,” says Pierre. “I wanted to make it easy to see the visual product.”

Sell Your Records

Pierre and his staff of 24 are always on the lookout for things their customers might want, so if you have records you want to sell, Aux 33 Tours is the place to turn. "We buy anything from a couple of records to massive collections," says Pierre. "No collection is too big for us." And if you do have a massive collection, a staff member from the shop will be glad to visit you at home.
