The Classic Chippy Arrives in Montreal

While the classic diner is a part of North American heritage, in the UK, one of the hallmarks of the dining scene is the chippy, a gourmet lunch bar specializing in fish & chips. Slightly more upscale than a diner, chippies draw lunch crowds from all over Britain who come for the fresh catch and typical English atmosphere. Who knew that Montrealers would love the traditional chippy just as much?

Jean-Michel Creusot, Paul Desbaillets and Toby Lyle were all labouring in the restaurant industry when they branched out on their own. They launched The Burgundy Lion, a traditional English pub that was a runaway successes. With that success under their belts, an idea for a new project began to brew. If Montrealers were so fond of English pubs, maybe they'd like to have their very own chippy.

The trio headed off to England visiting one chippy after the other, some world-renowned, before heading back to Montreal to turn their knowledge of British fare into Montreal's first Brit & Chips. Opened on McGill Street in 2010 with business crowds rushing to fill the space for an authentic taste of England.

A Taste of England for the Whole Family

Brit & Chips pays tribute to the old-fashioned fish & chip shop of yore. Its green facade beckons you to enter where you'll encounter Lord Batterbottom, the colourful cartoon fish mascot, fresh fries in hand and Union Jack in the background. "We wanted to recreate the authentic chippy experience in Quebec, and offer a unique place the whole family would love," explains Jean-Michel.

As you step inside, you'll be greeted by a smiling bunch of young staff, decked in old-fashioned chippy hats. The space is narrow, just like chippies in Britain, with cream coloured tiles, a chalkboard menu and even signs offering "take away" as it's said in Britain. There are high counters to sit at, some with a view of the open kitchen, and a section of tables and chairs.

The menu features fish & chips in a variety of delightful forms: haddock with maple syrup batter, salmon in Guinness batter, and even hake wrapped with orange crush batter. Traditionalists will be glad to know they can opt for the classic cod with Burgundy Lion beer batter, a recipe from The Burgundy Lion that still earns accolades. Each order of fish & chips is set upon newsprint to pay homage to traditional London chippy wrapping.

Here, it really is about fish & chips. You won't find burgers or chicken, just plenty of fish and a few other British specialties from the sea, such as tandoori popcorn shrimp, fish fritters and cod fish cakes.

While the food and decor have impressed diners, this trendy new spot is championing a social mission too. "All fish served here is Ocean Wise, which means it's been caught with sustainable practices and resources,” stresses Jean-Michel. “We also use as many ingredients as possible from local producers and fisherman."

British ales, beers and unique desserts

What is a plate of fish & chips without some British ale or beer? Brit & Chips serves Burgundy Lion Ale, made right in the pub itself, alongside typically British selections, like Newcastle Brown Ale and London Pride, the UK's best-selling cask-conditioned ale. You can grab a pint of Guinness too, or even a bottle of Bierbrier, a beer brewed in Quebec.

Dessert centers on ice cream, yet offers one option the adventurous will find it hard to resist; the Deep Fried Whatever. "The chippy is a unique concept for Quebec and people find that it's a fun and unique discovery," adds Jean-Michel. In fact, it's been so popular that the trio opened a second location in Côte-des-Neiges.
