Encore Books & Records

When Shelves Overflow

Peter and Sean Madden have had a long love affair with music and literature. Motivated by their mutual interests, in 2004, they decided to open Encore Books & Records, a second-hand book and record shop in NDG.

Initially the father and son duo were in the antiques business, but neither of them could resist buying items they personally loved – books for Peter and LPs for Sean. “After being buyers for other book and record  stores for a number of years, we were confident enough to open our own shop,” explains Sean, “and by that time, we had so many books and records, we almost had to open our own business just to sell some of the stock we had accumulated over the years.”

Father and Son Quality Time

By the time they opened up the shop, Peter, a playwright, was retirement age, but he loved to keep busy. Instead of it becoming just a storehouse for their literary and musical finds, Encore became a place where father and son spent quality time with each other. “This was the last business my dad ran, and it was a special experience to share it with him before he passed away. Now his picture hangs in the store overlooking what has become a community hub,” says Sean.

There is an artistic and academic slant to the inventory at Encore Books & Records, but there are also many genres of books, from history to cooking and everything in between. “We have many repeat customers who come looking for favourites. It’s almost like a treasure hunt for them,” says Sean.

When people come into the shop, they can get a quick orientation to the store and then the exploration begins. LP fans can revel in the large selection of hard-to-find records. Sean is constantly on the lookout for new stock, so customers can always find new things at Encore. “Our stock is continually changing,” says Sean. “It’s always exciting to come across a new LP that you’ve never heard before.”

Always Something to Discover

Sean is also a musician and plays mandolin and bass. His favourite types of music to play are jug band, old blues and reggae, so it’s common to find items in Encore that other stores don’t carry.

One of the interesting facets about the business of second-hand books and records are the things people leave behind inside of them. Things like love letters, money, and bookmarks. “Something we’ll be adding to our website is a section with pictures of things we’ve found," says Sean. "The records and books in this store were owned by people with their own story to tell. It’s like a little bit of local history.”
