In Search of the Sublime

There aren’t many businesses where an owner can boast about being the creator and sole proprietor of everything on display. However, MALTESTE Gallery is one such place.

MALTESTE opened his gallery in June 2012 and it features his amazing fine art photography made up of gorgeous landscapes and wildlife shots.

“It’s a nature art gallery dedicated exclusively to ultra high-end photography,” says MALTESTE. “Everything you see in the gallery is printed on genuine silver halide photo paper and is available in limited edition only.”

Inspirations from 17th to 19th century painters like Vermeer, Van Gogh and Albert Bierstadt can be seen in MALTESTE’s infatuation with nature and searching for moments of beauty within it. The swings in emotion that come from MALTESTE’s pieces range from the whimsical to the serene. His work evokes these different feelings and emotions through images of things like a stoic lion or the calm surface of a frozen lake. When you're looking at his work, it's clear that MALTESTE lives rooted in the present moment with light, color, composition and emotions.

MALTESTE Gallery is completely different from any gallery that you will see in Canada, as the man himself points out: “I am the artist and I represent my limited edition work exclusively. Every artwork is available in four standard sizes but if a customer wants a certain custom sizing, we will do it; my work is completely customizable to fit the clients' needs.”

My personal challenge and main objective is always to bring something very special to the public. Most people who buy my work don’t really care about awards or contests; they simply adore what they see in my gallery. - Mario MALTESTE, owner

The Image Hunter

MALTESTE’s passion for photography began in 1984 and has since then turned into a fully formed business. “I still go out and take photographs obviously and my trips are always preplanned, usually 18 to 24 months in advance,” he explains.

As a painter who uses light as his paintbrush, finding the right conditions for his photos is a delicate process. Sometimes he’ll be up at 2 a.m. waiting for the proper light to hit his subject in just the right way. Despite his painstaking process, MALTESTE tries to present and show people things that they would not normally see. If he goes on a trip to an exotic location he will stay there sometimes two or three weeks to get his striking image; he recently went to northern Canada to get a spectacular night shot of the Northern Lights and Milky Way.

MALTESTE has clients who hail from countries in both North America and Europe on his customers' experience as much as on his photography.

“We ship everywhere in the world using DHL worldwide express,” MALTESTE explains. “We print on absolutely the best genuine photo paper available in the industry and use the very best Plexiglas for Plexi Art lamination process.”

MALTESTE refuses to ship in cardboard boxes and ships finished artwork to collectors in custom made wooden crates. “When people get the shipment they just love it,” he says. “It looks very professional and they know it has been well protected during shipment.”

Work, Emotion and Impact

MALTESTE has received attention from several notable publications, including Playboy magazine, which gave him a rave review during the opening of his gallery, saying:

“[MALTESTE's] versatility is apparent, the photos themselves both classic and subjective. Each photo, different as they are, has one thread running between them: calm. And I can’t quite shake the juxtaposition of the adventurer in front of me and his art.”

“The next day, the interview was the main highlight on the playboy web site,” smiles MALTESTE.

But, attention, honours and fancy titles aren’t what fuel MALTESTE’s interest in this industry. “I care less about awards and I don’t look for recognition, I’m proud of my work and my true biggest competition is simply myself,” he admits.

“What I try to do is to really push myself hard to be better and better all the time,” MALTESTE reflects. “My personal challenge and main objective is always to bring something very special to the public. I would say that most people who buy my work don’t really care about awards or contests; they adore what they see in my gallery and do acquisition simply based on that. These are my clients, these are my ultimate honours.”
