Unique Foods (Canada) Inc. brings a line of beverages to Canada that meets the needs and demands of today’s consumer. Located in Montreal since 1996, the importer has become a major player in the field of commercial drinks. “We specialize in importing specialty, high-end products,” explains Josh Silver, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications. “We also act as a PR agency by promoting the products at a variety of events.”

A Business that Started from Zero

Unique Foods is a family business managed by Josh and his brother Jon, who’s the president. Josh and Jon wanted to launch a project that resembled them: modern, accessible and energetic. Thy started from zero in this extremely competitive industry and learned to overcome challenges through their fraternal bond. “We started selling Cadbury’s Stewart’s Old-Fashioned Soda out of our basement, out of a garage and out of trunks of cars. We went around, knocked on doors, and just built our business from the ground up. We earned our success,” says Josh.

Today, the importer is always looking for the best products and those that will become popular with consumers. The beverages imported by Unique Foods correspond to many different market segments, so there’s a considerable amount of canvassing involved. “We travel to various trade shows in Europe and the United States to find the best products to bring back to Canada,” Josh explains. “We have developed a range of expertise that is all encompassing, from bilingual labels to kosher certification and organic and gluten-free products.”

To remain competitive, the brothers recognize the importance of listening to Unique Foods’ customers. One of the ways they do this is by taking part in a variety of events to promote their products. They also make good use of modern methods to connect with customers. “Our social network is vast, and we have a strong presence on many social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Our fan base is large and we can reach them faster this way,” explains Josh.

Building a Winning Business Culture

This beverage importing business has experienced continuous growth over the years thanks to the perseverance of its founders and the special attention they pay to customers. Unique Foods wants to preserve a business culture that will allow it to be different than others. “I always tell our sales reps to earn the customer’s respect. We still try to do things the old-fashioned way and, whenever possible, to meet them face-to-face, with a smile and a handshake," says Josh. "And we always try to stay Unique!”
