No need for a pilgrimage to Montreal’s Little Italy for an authentic, readymade taste of Italian breakfast, lunch or dinner. Cavallaro Westmount’s freshly prepared takeout dishes delight its neighbourhood clientele: “It’s like setting foot in your nonna’s kitchen,” muses owner Tony Russo. “People walk in and can witness the prep from the sauces to the complete meal. That’s freshness you can see. Nothing is packaged like in a supermarket, because everything is made on site.”

Cavallaro Westmount also prepares homemade baked goods, serves quality coffees and imports a fine selection of Italian products and offers an eat-in area for a quick lunch or snack.

From the Dish Pit to Slinging Dishes

Tony has always been inspired by food. His grandfather, mother and uncles were strong influences who taught Cavallaro Westmount’s owner everything they knew. “I have never been to cooking school, but I taught myself based on the support of my family. The rest came naturally,” he explains. “I learned by observing my mother and members of my family. I developed my own techniques and recipes and am constantly improving them.”

. Tony began his career in kitchens at 16 as a dishwasher. Decades later, he has acquired the type of experience that only putting in the time can provide. “You can never let panic set in in the kitchen,” he affirms. “Even if there’s a lineup out the door and your workload keeps piling up, you gotta keep it cool. There’s always a solution to every problem.”

Tony’s appreciation of Italian cuisine is steeped in its flavourful simplicity. Cavallaro Westmount’s clientele is made up of regulars who appreciate the readymade takeout dishes prepared daily, but also stop by for a chat and a few recommendations. “A lot of clients ask me for my tips and tricks and I’m happy to share. People buy their ingredients here, so it’s only natural to help them get the best of their products on the plate.”

All In A Day’s Work

The chef plans to remain at the helm of Cavallaro Westmount for as long as he finds pleasure in his work. “When you love what you do, you can’t call it work,” he explains. “We have a lot of customers that come by every day. We talk about yesterday’s hockey or football games… just like old friends!”
