Meet the owner

"A legacy of the 1988 Winter Olympics.” That’s how Patrick Seltsam describes Alien In-Line. “If it weren’t for the Olympics, we wouldn’t be here,” he adds. Patrick was one of four individual that launched this in-line skating school in 1994. “When we started, in-line was booming. It was an interesting, trendy sport,” says Mark Greenwald, who co-founded the business with Patrick.

Both Patrick and Mark are American speed skaters. Mark, in fact, competed on the U.S. team in the 1988 Winter Olympics. “The Olympic Oval brought us here to train,” Mark says, noting the facility was North America's first covered speed skating oval, drawing them and other speed skaters from around the world to Calgary.

When Mark retired from competition in 1992, he ended up settling in Calgary. “The speed-skating connection remains very strong,” says Mark of Alien In-Line. Among Alien's staff, for example, is Bill Wotherspoon, father of Canadian speed skater Jeremy Wotherspoon, and a number of speed skaters have served as Alien staff and instructors.
