Meet the owner

Russ Prefontaine and his brother Chris always wanted to have a coffee shop that would become the heart of the community where they lived, and they succeeded when the flagship Analog Coffee opened its doors on 17th Avenue in 2012. “What we wanted to create was a community-based café," explains Russ. "When you walk in it is so comfortable, people just feel at ease.”

Fratello Coffee Roasters had already been providing independent cafés with their brew for more than 30 years, but with Analog Coffee the roasters’ side of the business now has direct access to the public. “Primarily what we wanted to do was have a voice directly to our customers, the people who drink our coffee every single day,” says Russ. “Building a café in a way was like a showroom, like a stage, where we can perform and tell our story loud and clear to the people we want to tell it to.”

Well, I like Analog coffee. the coffee is mostly good and now they have more options for different lattes. I think they should add oat milk as alternative milk, also. However, I was there recently and I couldnt find a chair to sit outside. They told me that people are stealing chairs so they do not have it enough. I do not think that it is customers problem and I really believe instead of just giving reasons they should just go and buy new ones and provide the service for the customer.

    I was really impr...

I was really impressed with the quality of the coffee and the relaxed atmosphere of this shop. It is definitely not a quick-stop type of coffee shop, but it does not claim to be of the Tim Horton's in-and-out variety. This is the perfect place to enjoy a quality cup of hand-crafted caffeine and a good book or easy walk down 17th. My only issue is that it can get quite crowded and loud during the peak times, but that rarely stops me from dropping by.

The Fratello brothers’ coffee empire is expanding – they’ve launched a third Analog location in Southcentre Mall. While most people go to Analog to grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee, the café also carries a tantalizing selection of fresh-made sandwiches and pastries including one of the best peanut butter cookies in the city. Neither crunchy nor chewy, this enigmatic treat is silky soft with a slight bit of crumble.
