Meet the owner

There’s an old saying that if you want to know where the best place to eat is, ask a trucker. In Calgary the answer you'll get is the Blackfoot Truckstop Diner. Since 1956, the family-owned diner has been serving classic dishes and homemade desserts while becoming a fixture in the community.

The matriarch of the family business was Edna Taylor. She opened Blackfoot Truckstop Diner and soon became well known by truck drivers across North America, and her generosity to local charities made her a popular face in the Inglewood community in Calgary. Edna passed away in 2011, but her tireless efforts left a legacy behind that her family now upholds. “It’s an honour to be a part of it,” says daughter-in-law and now co-owner Tanya Brown. “She helped so many people in the community. She donated a lot of her time and used the restaurant to help others.”

Edna’s hospitality was passed down to the next generation and they continue to stay true to those values as they run the restaurant. “We try to be real with our customers,” says Tanya. “It’s more like a family. We know a lot of our customers by name and they’ve been coming here for years. They bring their kids and now their grandkids are coming here.”

It’s been a slice: The best sweet pies in Calgary

This venerated Calgary diner is open 24 hours a day, serving up an all-day breakfast menu of belly-busting comfort food. Blackfoot is also one of the best spots in the city to grab a slice of pie. One of the most popular offerings, the flapper pie (also known as the Mile High Pie), is a meal in itself. For less than $5, you can enjoy a massive, graham-cracker-crusted custard pie topped with a heap of fluffy meringue. Also on the menu: lemon meringue, fruit and cream pies.
