Upcycling. It’s a 21st century word that refers to the process of taking something destined for the landfill, be it broken appliances, factory scraps, old seatbelts, used bottles or mismatched tea cups and transforming them into something new and useful. ReWorks Upcycle Shop Solita Work loves the idea of reducing waste by creating new products, especially if those products are beautifully designed and as artistic as they are functional.

“Part of the motivating factor for me is that I care about the environment and pollution, but I also want to have a creative job, so it’s killing two birds with one stone,” says Work, who first came up with the idea for ReWorks when she was in art college. “I wanted to create a job for myself that was artistic and meaningful to the world.”

ReWorks isn’t stocked with objects that look like they’re made of garbage. Work carefully curates her stock, with Albertan and Canadian artists and producers accounting for 70 per cent of the store’s goods. The store features many fun items such as drinking glasses made of beer bottles, purses fashioned out of vintage license plates and bags constructed of pop can tabs. It also carries higher-end pieces like chic fringed bags made of bike tires, decorative serving plates comprised of broken glass as well as design-forward coffee tables made of used skateboards. Work also sells jewellery, made of everything from reclaimed copper wire to refashioned clip-on earrings.
