Meet the owner

In 2009, Michelle Kaplan and a friend decided to sign up for a dance class – and it was this class that led Michelle’s life in a new direction. “We took one class together – it wasn’t really for her,” she says. “And I just kept going. And since then, it’s been one class that turned into two, and then four, and capping it about six – and, eventually, owning [the] dance studio.”

Owning the studio may not have been part of Michelle’s plan, but it wasn’t out of the ordinary for her to be attracted to dance. She’d already spent her life dedicated to the pursuit of different art, with passions like singing and playing drums. “Music is my life,” she says. It’s an expression that reflects itself in the work she’s already done. She spent almost 14 years working for a music company in North Carolina, helping well-respected blues artists like Johnny Winter and Big Bill Morganfield play all around the world.

After returning to Canada, Michelle used that raw artistry from the blues to explore another art form that taps into raw emotions: the language of dance. It was what led her to take that one class at belly dancing studio Bedouin Beats in 2009. And now, “dance has become an obsession,” she says.
