Meet the owner

The storied history of the Rago and Saccomanno family's rise to restaurant success starts as a humble one. Carmelo Rago was a social studies teacher who, along with his father-in-law, Maurizio Saccomanno, bought a pizza place near his home in Castle Downs in 1979. Through hard work and perseverance, he managed to survive the economic downturn of the ‘80s and soon the business started to flourish. Sorrentino’s Restaurant Group now owns eight restaurants, a pub and seven cafés in the Edmonton area, including the Bistecca Italian Steakhouse in Century Park.

In 2008, Sorrentino’s restaurants were well-known for their Italian cuisine, but the family wanted to do something different. They opened Bistecca Italian Steakhouse as a way to honour both their Italian heritage and Alberta’s famed beef industry. “Bistecca came about to have a twist on the steakhouse restaurant,” says Carmelo. “Being in Alberta, [with] its famous Alberta beef, we thought ‘let’s put a spin on it and make it an Italian steakhouse.’ That means a steakhouse that offers pasta and Italian dishes.”

Prime pasta in Edmonton

Prime pasta in Edmonton

An upscale Italian eatery in Edmonton’s south side (just off the Century LRT station), Bistecca offers an elegant atmosphere with creative, classic Italian dishes. The butternut squash ravioli is delicious, as are the beef short rib ravioli and the bison cannelloni.

Fall in amore with these Italian restaurants in Edmonton

Fall in amore with these Italian restaurants in Edmonton

I don’t usually think of steak, or even beef of any kind, when I think of Italian cuisine. But Bistecca is changing that. This restaurant is an Italian version of a traditional steakhouse. Intriguing, yes? The name means “beef steak” in Italian (how on the nose of them!) and the menu features antipasta, pasta and entrees, including, yes, steak, from Spring Creek Ranch. Pair your Italian-style steak with one of more than 200 wines.

Edmonton Valentine’s Day dinners for lovers who love food

Edmonton Valentine’s Day dinners for lovers who love food

Chef Sonny Sung will prepare a sensational three-course Valentine’s Day meal for lovers. Each course will feature several choices, so even couples with vastly different tastes from each other will be more than satisfied. The restaurant’s name means “steak” in Italian, so there is a strong possibility of some excellent Alberta beef as part of this special meal, in addition to traditional Italian dishes. The usual a la carte menu won’t be available on this occasion.
