Meet the owner

When Frank and Andrea Olson opened Canteen, a restaurant on 124 street, it wasn’t their first time as restaurant owners. They already had a successful place in Strathearn called the Red Ox Inn with a history dating back decades. But because they hadn’t opened that restaurant themselves, they always felt it wasn’t completely theirs.

“So, there were lots of awesome things about it, but we didn’t get a chance to build it from scratch,” says Frank. They also lived close to 124 street, and thought it would be great to own a business in the area. So, in 2012, they opened Canteen, a modern and warm space.

Restaurants with the best fried chicken in Edmonton

Restaurants with the best fried chicken in Edmonton

Located on Edmonton’s popular 124 Street, Canteen’s fried chicken offering is on their beloved brunch menu and is an infamous dish: fried chicken and waffles. This southern stable has taken the city by storm and Canteen nails it with their buttermilk fried chicken, served atop a Belgian waffle and complemented with smoky maple syrup. Everything Canteen does is gourmet and heavenly, and this dish is no different.

Edmonton restaurants with delicious duck dishes

The always inviting Canteen, on 124 Street, offers duck-loving foodies two opportunities to satisfy their craving: lunch and dinner. For lunch, try the confit duck leg with fingerling potato, snap peas, market carrots, black garlic and pumpkin seed. At dinner, you’ll find savoury duck pastrami offered on their share plate, alongside cornbread, cherry molasses smoked arctic char, pickles, toast with bacon marmalade, buckwheat blini and pecorino cheese.

Tiny, intimate and cozy Edmonton restaurants

Tiny, intimate and cozy Edmonton restaurants

This 50-seat restaurant, located on the blooming 124 Street, is owned by the same people behind the Red Ox Inn. Canteen is more modern but just as casual and cozy. The menu is more experimental, with items like corn fritters with smoky maple syrup, kale salad and Albacore tuna poke. They’re open for lunch, dinner and brunch (on weekends), so there are plenty of opportunities to grab one of the few seats available.
