Meet the owner

Since North 53 opened its doors in January 2014, it has quickly become a favourite dining spot for many. The restaurant came onto the dining scene as a place where people could enjoy only Canadian menu items, with most of the produce coming from Alberta. It was an idea embraced by many diners but the owners eventually saw the opportunity to evolve the menu for their clientele.

With the departure of their head chef, the restaurant has welcomed new changes to the menu, which still commits to showcasing local products as much as possible, but also includes more affordable menu items. “I think it’s pretty impressive that we were able to transition menus like we did because not many small places can do that,” says Alex Trann-McEwen, general manager.

Extensive drink menu, hard to pick just one. Absolutely delicious meal! Had a 6pm reservation, were leaving by 7pm. Highly recommend.

It was a great atmosphere to spend time with friends. The music was perfect and not too loud so we could chat without yelling. The drinks and food were both delicious and I'm already looking forward to my next visit. The mushroom "steak" and tuna tetaki were outstanding.

The cocktails at North 53 are amazing, and if the food was better we would definitely go back. Unfortunately, we were served chicken pieces that were not cooked. Also, the ribs were extremely salty - as if they had been brined but not rinsed. We really enjoyed the salad, and the potatoes were good. The service was average - our server was very friendly but could have been a bit more attentive. Overall, not a place we would go back to unless it was just for a drink.

The atmosphere was beautiful. Unfortunately the service was (although friendly) unacceptable. Took over 1 hour to receive each plate. Food was not served all at once. Received one plate of tuna - 20 minutes later brussel sprouts. Portions (although interesting to taste) were incredibly small. Cocktails were unique. However took 20-30 minutes to receive our drink ( even just a can of beer). A plate of salad was forgotten entirely - they did give us a free drink for it. All in all - I was very disappointed. We were a party of 7 (two minors) - with a total cost of 350$. Not the kind of price tag you want to associate with empty tummies and incredibly slow service.

Service was very slow despite the place not being busy. The fact that the bill cannot be split is ridiculous, and we also were not alerted to the automatic gratuity which was slightly underhanded. Overall I don't think we will be back.

Everything was great from when we walked in till when we walked out 4 hours later - 8 dishes of food plus deserts. Staff made some excellent recommendations and paired the food and drinks up perfectly. Was a very enjoyable night out!!!

This is my favorite place. Always great food and service. This time food and drinks were very quick. Server was very friendly. Water was replaced immediately without asking. Loved the text message to confirm my reservation and comment. It made things personalized. We will be back as always! Keep up the good work. While the atmosphere, service and cocktail menu is impressive, the food is simply terrible. My dish (the Bulghogi Game Hen) was incredibly oversalted (think pure salt lick) and such a soggy mess - the kim chi pancakes were nothing but a pile of over-seasoned mush) that I could not stomach more than several bites. I traded with my husband (who had the Beef Bourguignon) and he was so shocked by how salty it was that he sent it back. The staff were amazing and so accommodating and offered to comp the dish. We were very happy with how they handled the situation. We eat out quite a bit and I've had some some sub-par meals, but this was the first time I have ever felt the need to send back a dish, so that's saying something. The beef dish was super dry and the stew was very watery. Both my husband and I were so taken aback by how terrible our meals were, especially considering all the hype surrounding this place. Interestingly, the table next to us also sent one of their dishes back..... The manager came out to apologize for the food and was very accommodating to their situation as well. Perhaps the kitchen was just having a very bad night, but even if that is the case, we surely will not be going back to North 53 for the food. Maybe just the drinks... What a shame, because we live in the area and enjoy walking to our local dining spots.

We thoroughly enjoyed the popcorn chicken and mushroom "steak" with gnocchi. The gnocchi was the best both my dining partner and I have ever had, it was pure heaven! I will definitely be returning :) Brenda S.

This is a place where the best seat’s a barstool, because the bartenders teach you about the drink you’re about to have. One of my favourite bartenders, Elizabeth Yu, designed the Rosey Cheeks. It has a floralness to it, with rose petals, saffron cardamom rose syrup and egg white. It’s frothy, sweet and very refreshing. The best cocktail is the Smoke & Oak Fashioned, made with smoked maple syrup and Oaken gin. They light spruce wood on fire, and fill the glass with that smoke, making it extremely aromatic. And, it’s served using that piece of wood as a coaster.

The fun, adventurous menu changes seasonally here, thanks to the chefs’ use of locally sourced ingredients. Dine family-style with a group of friends so you can sample a wider variety of dishes. Start with snacks, including chicken liver mousse on rye and popcorn chicken. Then, work on small plates, such as pork cabbage rolls or rutabaga and oxtail tart. Afterwards, move your way up to the large plates, like the whole chicken stuffed with steel cut oat and offal stuffing. Finally, sample some desserts, such as cognac ice cream.
