This ode to winter takes place February 12 to 21, 2016, making Family Day weekend the perfect opportunity for the whole family to partake in the festivities together. Nice ice baby: Ice adventures in Edmonton
This free family event – and Edmonton’s longest running winter festival – takes over Hawrelak Park for 10 sparkling days from Feb 12 to 26, 2016. The festival combines sports – especially skating on the icy smooth pond – with art, history and culture. Take a family lesson in snow sculpting, ride a horse-drawn sleigh, meet a team of sled-dogs, follow performers down the twinkle-lit folk trail and witness a fire sculpture burn up the night.

Best places to escape the Edmonton winter blues
This festival usually takes place soon after the Ice on Whyte Festival, extending the wintery fun. The festival centres on competition: fire sculpting, snow sculpting, marathons, triathlons, speed skating and snow shoeing. While some of the events are for athletes, there are plenty of things for us regular folk to try out. It’s a great way to experience as many winter activities as possible, before the sun shines too bright and Frosty melts.
