Originally imagined as a little, French country house restaurant in Edmonton’s most southern tip, The Almanac evolved from its original concept into a French inspired gastropub on Edmonton’s popular Whyte Avenue. Having opened its doors in late December of 2015, The Almanac is a new addition to the Whyte Avenue scene, but one that brings together Old Strathcona’s love of music and independent businesses with a great beer and cocktail selection, and a relaxed, unpretentious ambiance.

Together, operating owners, Josh Meachem (bar manager), Alysha Couture (executive chef) and Dominque Moquin (front of house), are working to make The Almanac an inclusive and interesting addition to Edmonton’s music and restaurant scene, while also showcasing a unique, owner operated experience. Josh says that when owners are hands-on, working in their restaurants, customers obtain a better quality experience overall from food through to service.

All the exciting Edmonton culinary hot spots to try in 2016

All the exciting Edmonton culinary hot spots to try in 2016

Not to be confused with the now-closed restaurant of the same name in St. Albert, this spot opened in Old Strathcona in January. It serves French food in a gastropub environment from 11 a.m. till midnight, making it a good option for the university crowd. The menu includes yummy snacks, such as pretzel bites, roasted chickpeas, popcorn chicken with Parmesan dip, charcuterie and vegetable chips. The main menu ranges from soups and salads to bigger entrees, including a pesto chicken sandwich, arctic char, pork belly and bouef bourguignon. Bonus: They double as a venue for live music.

10 great brunches to savour this Easter weekend in Edmonton

This French gastropub serves a lovely Sunday brunch. Classic options such as steak and eggs or smoked salmon bennys are on the menu, or switch it up by trying the duck confit hash. For dessert, try the maple créme brulee. The Almanac opens at 11:30 on Saturday and Sunday.
