Meet the owner

Susan Forfey and Wayne Jones’ love of the service industry led them to open The Cask and Barrel, a bar and restaurant, in 2012. Susan had left the bar business to work a regular day job, but soon discovered that she missed the industry. So together the duo started looking for a spot to open their own place, and they wanted it to be something different from the usual Irish pubs and dance clubs that dominated the Edmonton nightlife scene at the time. “I wanted something that brought back the art of socializing,” says Susan.

They had four different concepts in mind as they started their search, but when they came to the space on 104th Street south of Jasper Avenue they knew they had a chance to do something unique. “The spot was perfect,” Susan recalls. “It was an empty square space. It was a clean canvas. We got to do what we wanted with it.” That meant that they were able to design The Cask and Barrel from the ground up.

Stayed at a nearby hotel downtown Edmonton, they are just down the street. Great service, and great food. I could taste the quality in the home made chips and dip. Beef stew with creme fresh was great and thick. Flattens sourdough toast was a eye catching and flavorful accompaniment. Rosemary chicken sandwich with salad was tasty and fresh. Ordered without the BBQ sauce on the sandwich. Not a sauce fan. Drinks were perfect. A great place for a cozy diner. Ambiance is just right. Will be back.

A good bloody caesar in Edmonton

A good bloody caesar in Edmonton

Downtown’s The Cask and Barrel presents their own special caesar: The Suzer. The Suzer is a caesar made with Ardbeg 10 year old Scotch instead of vodka, adding a smoky flavour to this classic cocktail. Garnished with pepperoni to highlight the cocktail’s savoury flavour, the Suzer is a crowd pleaser that outsells the traditional version. If Scotch isn’t your deal, try Cask’s original CB Caesar: One ounce of vodka topped with Guinness.

A taste of the season: Go wild for whisky in Edmonton

A taste of the season: Go wild for whisky in Edmonton

You can lose yourself in the whisky selection at The Cask and Barrel, so be sure to ask if you need help. Grab a wooden stool and nestle up to the bar: They’ve got Scotch, rye, bourbon, blends - everything your heart desires. The food is worth a try, too: Go for the butter chicken or The Rancher, a beef stew with mashed potatoes.

Pass the pint at these British pubs in Edmonton

You know it’s a good place when they have beer, wine and whisky clubs. Sign me up! It’s a warm and cozy pub that’ll make you feel right at home. International beers, wines, whiskeys and pub fare done right. The shepherd’s pie, sliders and “the rancher” are the top food picks, for sure.
