Sometimes people set out to become successful business owners, and sometimes it just happens because of a perfect combination of opportunity and hard work. For Kathy Leskow, there was no plan to become a leader in the homemade cookie business – she just loved to bake. “It started out as a hobby. I baked so much that I had nothing to do with my baking, so I started selling it at a farmer’s market,” says Kathy. “We started in our home kitchen with no special equipment.” Her cookies soon became so popular she had to build a bakery in her basement. But eventually, that too became too small. In the spring of 2014 Kathy opened Confetti Sweets on Broadway Boulevard in Sherwood Park.

When she started Kathy never thought she would move out of her basement bakery or that Confetti Sweets would grow to where it is today. “Some people go into business and try to expand right away and they’re going to make all this money," she notes. "It was never like that for us. It evolved slowly and we built up our customer base until we could support a storefront.”

Confetti Sweets can still be found in the farmer’s market too, but even that side of the business has grown. Now they are in nine farmer’s markets each week. “It’s still our roots and I believe farmer’s markets are awesome, so we’ll always be there,” says Kathy.
