Meet the owner

“I had been working in a corporate environment in human resources and I was feeling a degree of dissatisfaction,” says Carol Maxwell, owner of Paint for Joy. “That’s when I started taking painting classes.” When the studio Carol was visiting closed its doors, she and her husband decided that they should fill the void. She opened her store in 2001, and immediately found herself welcomed into the local business environment. “St. Albert is a wonderful community,” Carol says. “There’s a lot of interest in art and do-it-yourself projects.” Paint For Joy was created to serve this burgeoning enthusiasm for crafts.

“I realized how affirming creative projects can be,” Carol says. “Anybody can learn to paint if they are willing to be patient and give the process some time. But our objective is to introduce as many people in St. Albert and the surrounding area to decorative art.”

Watercolour, oil, acrylics, coloured pencil and ink and rouge are the mediums you’ll find when you Paint for Joy. Begun more than 15 years ago, the studio offers classes in drawing and painting, some of which are taught by guest artists. No experience is required, as owner Carol Maxwell believes art should not be limited to those who are “naturally gifted.” The studio also offers custom framing and features a gift gallery of locally produced original artwork. Additionally, art supplies can be purchased in-house.
