You never know what treasures lurk in a good second-hand bookstore like the SHAVA Bookstore in Grandin Mall. The store opened in the 90s and has been at its current 1,600 square foot space in the mall since 2007, building up a following of fans who love reading. “We have people who are there waiting for us to open in the morning,” says Jackie White, President of SHAVA (Sturgeon Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer Association), which runs the bookstore. “We have people who come from within St. Albert and outlying areas. They’ll come in on a bi-weekly basis and leave with cartons of books.”

The SHAVA Bookstore is set up like most new bookstores, with books organized by subject matter to make it easier to find the literary gem you’re searching for. Most of the books are only a dollar or two but the store still manages to raise a lot of money for the Sturgeon Hospital. In October of 2014, the bookstore generated nearly $5,000 in one month, all of which goes toward funding equipment and programs at the hospital.
