Searching for the perfect setting for your next big date-night or celebratory dinner? Look no further than what can be described as one of the most romantic rooms in the city — Carthage Café on Commercial Drive. Vancouver’s only Tunisian restaurant, Carthage serves classic French and Tunisian fare using fresh ingredients and exotic spices.

Opened in 2006 by brothers Zico and Mohammed Draoui, the room itself has an intimate, authentic charm unlike anywhere else in Vancouver. With its bay windows, glossy 85-year-old mahogany floors and walls, candle-lit tables and fine-dining service, Carthage has mastered the Parisian bistro vibe. Not surprisingly, Carthage draws a strong French crowd. “When I opened here I discovered there was a big French community in Vancouver,” says Zico.

We had a combined birthday dinner. One member of our party eats seafood, but not meat or poultry. There were lots of seafood options - in fact we all had seafood, and all of our meals were great. The atmosphere was lovely. We had a great time.

This was our first visit to the Carthage Café; it immediately brought to mind the many small restaurants we visited over the years in Europe. Even more to our delight, the food and service also evoked cherished memories of those same places.

We had a terrific experience at the Carthage Cafe. We had a fun interaction and attentive, able service from Sandra, who was working there for her first day. We ended up meeting both the owner/cook and his wife, and both were personable and delightful. The window tables against the street are the best: quiet, cozy and allowing us the opportunity to follow the Commercial Drive goings on outside. We liked the decor, and our meals were superb. We will be back, and heartily endorse this place!

Wonderful atmosphere. Food was good. Service a bit stiff. Interesting to reserve a table and then be placed at a less desirable table without a reservation sign on it. Might as well have just been a walk-in.

Food was excellent but the service left me with a sour taste, especially considering the set menu imposed for Valentine's day was on the pricey side ($75/person). Given that, you would expect excellent service. Instead I had food plopped in front of me, and a grunt of the name of the dish. I had the server reach over me several times to move things around on the table, without even an "pardon my reach". Not the type of service I'd expect given the price tag they imposed. However, food was definitely cooked well, and the ambience is very cozy.

The food was OK -- though not what I would expect from a $30 dine out menu. For example, the chicken was littered with small, smashed bones. The service was OK. They called to move my reservation back with only 4 hours to go. They sounded upset when I said "no".

We got to the restaurant on a busy Saturday evening. Our reservations were at 7pm, I sent an email confirmation that was sent to me that confirmed 7pm as my reservation time. My friend and I arrived on time. When I was asked about my name and what time my reservations were they accused us of being late and that our reservations were at 6.30 not 7?! They then proceeded to say that we will only have an hour and a half for dinner because we were late. I showed the host my email confirmation and even check out the computer system they were using to organize reservations. They mistakenly took someone else's reservations at 6.30 and put them under my name. Through out the night, the hostess and server kept coming to our table saying that we will adjust things around, that we may need to move tables for dessert, then that we had until 9 for dinner??! My friends and I were not amused with this. The restaurant made the mistake not us. In the end, we didn't have to move because by the time it was 9 the place had died down. The food was amazing and delicious but the service could have been a lot more on the ball about customers with reservations.
