Meet the owner

When Nicolás Amaya and his brother Andrés began visiting Vancouver breweries, in preparation for opening their own, they noticed an interesting trend. “In a lot of ways, they were all the same,” he chuckles. “The beers were all really good, but the places had barely any theme to them. We thought: 'Well, all we really have to offer is our heritage. Let's use that as much as possible.' ”

Coming from a country dominated by the big beer industry, exposure to B.C.’s local products sparked Nicolás' interest, which then rubbed off on his brother Andrés. Over the years, their interest in the industry grew tremendously and eventually got them thinking, “how can we start our own craft brewery?”

The heritage in question is South American, more specifically Colombian, and at Andina Brewing – the business they opened in March of 2017 – that heritage is on full display, in everything from the decor, to the menu options to the beer itself. And of course, Nicolás notes, that also extends to the name.

“It's what you call a woman from the Andes mountains,” he explains. “Our family comes from Bogota, so we're all Andinas – well, my brother and I are Andinos, and our wives, they're Andinas.”

Best new craft breweries in Vancouver

Best new craft breweries in Vancouver

In March 2017, Andina opened their doors on Powell Street, within walking distance of other popular East Van breweries – Storm, Doan’s and Powell Street, to name a few. The brewery – a big yellow building with a mural on the side – stays true to its Andean roots in terms of décor and flavour profiles. They focus on unique, flavourful beers, incorporating fruits from South America, as well as panela (cane sugar).

Best new Vancouver restaurants to try in 2017

Bringing a taste of South America to Powell Street, the newly opened Andina Brewing Company is brightening up this industrial ‘hood with its eye-catching exterior mural and unique line-up of brews made with Patagonia Malt. The tasting lounge – adorned with colourful art, textiles and crafts – feels like a world away from grey Vancouver and the regionally inspired food menu is focused on savoury snacks like ceviche and arepas. Try a plate of pachos (a South American take on nachos), which feature thinly sliced fried plantain chips topped with cheese, tomatoes, green onion, black olives and a Colombian-inspired Hogao sauce
