Don’t be fooled by Barre Fitness’ gorgeous, dance-studio-inspired interior, this stylish Yaletown gym is not only for ballerinas.

Located in a historic brick building on Mainland Street, Barre Fitness attracts clients of all walks of life with its welcoming atmosphere, talented instructors, and low-impact yet challenging workouts, which build a lean, lithe dancer’s body … without the actual dancing.

“It’s an effective combination of ballet, Pilates, sports conditioning and stretching that is guaranteed to transform your body … and work muscles you’ve never felt before,” says co-founder and creator, Ella Jotie (pictured above), of the unique workout method. A former professional dancer and longtime fitness instructor, Ella first encountered barre while training in Los Angeles.“I knew immediately that I had found something that melded my passions,”

Ella and her co-founder Michele Murgel opened Barre Fitness, Canada’s first-ever barre studio, in 2010. A former software executive, Michele's experience in successful business management – and her passion for fitness – made her the perfect partner for Ella, and the pair have been helping clients reach their fitness goals ever since.

Where to spoil Mom for Mother’s Day in Vancouver

If you’re looking to arrange a fun outing with your active mom, why not spend the afternoon together getting your sweat on at an energizing barre class. Barre classes are the ultimate workout, combining components of ballet with sports conditioning, Pilates and flexibility training to sculpt and tone your body. Barre Fitness has three locations across Vancouver and offers a variety of different class styles to suit all levels. Tip: If you and your mom are new to barre, we recommend starting with a Barre Classic class that covers the basic movements with a focus on proper form.

Vancouver yoga studios with charitable community classes

Vancouver yoga studios with charitable community classes

It’s not just yoga studios that practice good karma; Yaletown’s Barre Fitness holds a Raise the Barre class every Sunday, with proceeds going to a charity chosen by members that month. The ballet-inspired fitness classes are designed to help strengthen your core, tone your arms and legs, and get your heart rate up with brief cardio bursts. Participants are encouraged to BYOD (bring your own donation) but the suggested minimum is $10 and hey, it’s for charity and most classes are usually $22.
