Meet the owner

Step into Baru Latino’s cozy restaurant off Vancouver’s Alma Street and you’ll swear you’re in a hip, urban location downtown. Instead, Baru brings a downtown feel to the West Point Grey neighbourhood, with delectable food and even more scrumptious drinks. Once inside, the smell of fired grills and the sound of smooth jazz makes the weekly mojito specials a more decadent experience. Top off your experience with mood-lit décor and top-notch service and Baru will become your favourite restaurant in no time.

The current owners, Dave Newis and René Lafleur have operated Baru for the last six years. With 60 years of industry experience between the two of them, Dave and René bought Baru, originally a Columbian restaurant. Dave says that they looked at food trends emerging in the market and decided Latino food was the way ahead. “We were having too many dinner parties and our wives wanted us to open a restaurant,” said Dave. The rest, as they say, is history.

Vancouver’s best bars for South American inspired cocktails

Vancouver’s best bars for South American inspired cocktails

When it comes to the Latin food scene in Vancouver, Baru Latino is one of the originals. Located on the western edge of Point Grey, this intimate neighbourhood spot serves proper versions of the classics, including two citrusy faves: a Mexican paloma (with tequila and grapefruit), and a Brazilian caipirinha made with muddled lime and cachaça. You’ll also find a handful of original signature cocktails on the menu, such as the Baru Caesar, which gets its smoky flavour from chipotle-infused mezcal.

Vancouver bars for freshly muddled mojitos

Vancouver bars for freshly muddled mojitos

Nestled in the West Point Grey neighbourhood, this cozy lounge is sure to entice you with its moody ambiance and award-winning Latin fare – the tangy ceviche is a must try. Available on the rocks or blended, mint-infused mojitos are a house specialty here and can be ordered by the glass or the jug-full if you’re dining with a group. The zesty Cuban cocktails are made with Bacardi Superior rum, freshly muddled mint, lemon and lime juice, simple syrup and a splash of sparkling soda water. Seasonal variations showcase locally sourced fresh fruit like raspberries, grilled pineapples and blood oranges.
