The stretch of Fraser Street between 23rd and 24th is becoming a foodie haven, with Graze, Earnest Ice Cream and Bâtard Boulangerie & Cafe Moderne all in a row. Bâtard is a joint project of Chris Brown from Rise Artisan Bakery and Ecco Il Pane fame, and Bruno and Sally Born and their daughter Elsie of Finest at Sea.
It's both a bakery/épicierie and café set in a completely renovated 100-year-old building. Chris describes Bâtard Boulangerie & Cafe Moderne as “a French country-style bakery and café with a Vancouver artisan flavour.”

When entering Fraser Street’s Batard in search of bread, you’ll need to try your best not to be distracted by the front case filled with a mouth-watering array of delicious French pastries. Look beyond these tempting treats and you’ll notice loaves upon rustic loaves stocked on wooden shelves behind the main counter. From multigrain baguette to county levain (classic sourdough), Batard offers a range of authentic French loaves that are deliciously chewy and downright addicting.

Chris Brown (the owner/baker behind Rise Artisan Bakery) is one of the co-founders of this eastside joint, so it should come as no surprise that locals rave about Bâtard’s in-house toast bar. Order up two thick slices of rustic white bread served with a side of seasonal jam (made in-house of course), nut butter, olive tapenade, French cognac liver pate or wild B.C. smoked salmon pate. You’ll definitely be tempted to pick up an artisanal loaf to recreate the experience at home.

The family-friendly spot is run by Chris Brown from Rise Artisan Bakery and Bruno and Sally Born, who own Finest at Sea. They offer European sandwiches, seafood salads and other fish-focused foods and also make their own marmalades, jams and vinegars. It’s a beautiful space with plenty of highchairs and a wooden rocking elephant – which once belonged to the owners’ daughter – for kids to play on.
