Meet the owner

After a rare night off work sick, John Bishop calls the diners he missed last night to apologize for his absence.  It’s clear why Bishop’s has had more than 30 years of success: John Bishop is a class act. The acclaimed chef, cookbook author and consummate host says, “It’s a tough industry, it’s not romantic. You have to want to be in it.” It’s evident that even after three decades in the business, he still has that passion.

“My clients often say that being in my restaurant feels like being at home, and that’s a huge compliment.” John goes in every night to oversee operations, mingle with customers and shuck a few oysters.  He considers his restaurant, which has won countless local and national awards, an extension of his home and family.

Took my girlfriend for her birthday and had a great time. The food was awesome which it should be. We had 4 glasses of wine, two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts for a total bill (with tip) of $330.00. which I thought was reasonable for the amount of alcohol we had and the day we were going to spend. The server was very attentive and friendly as was everyone in the restaurant. My only very tiny complaint is that they didn't comp my friend's birthday dessert. Maybe that's stupid of me but every other restaurant I've been to on a special occasion has comped the dessert. Understand it's not about the mullah, it's about the principle of the issue. After dropping over $300 on dinner I'm not going to complain about an extra $15 but it just seemed kind of cheap on their part. Just a little complaint though... I'd definitely go back if my dates want to.

Took my wife for our anniversary having read some good reviews online. We were surprised by the size of the place, as it only seats around 40 people but the food was just fantastic. It was also nicely proportioned so you could eat a full three courses without feeling stuffed ... or guilty. We had the Tuna Carpaccio to start with whilst she followed up with pork and I had venison. I can't describe the dishes but the presentation was stunning with excellent attention to detail. I finished with the chocolate trio whilst she had her favourite, creme brulee. My wife had a single glass of champagne and the whole meal came to just over $160 without tips. It was a fantastic meal though and a good celebration. I think the only flaw is a lack of space and having to park a block or two away but the food makes up for it.

Vancouver celebrity chef John Bishop’s long-standing Kitsilano bistro made headlines when it first opened for it’s undeniably West Coast dishes and commitment to high quality, local ingredients. Here, halibut comes from Haida Gwaii, and steelhead salmon from Lois Lake. The quiet, upscale eatery is a destination for tourists from around the world – and for good reason, with seafood almost as fresh one would find on the beach!
