It’s hard to find a more Canadian story than the one behind the creation of Bomber Brewing. The plan to start a brewery was hatched in the dressing room of a beer league hockey team named — you guessed it — the Bombers. Blair Calibaba, Cam Andrews and Don Farion — who brought his long-time business partner Dean Mallel with him — are now teammates on and off the ice.

The story begins with some home brew that Blair slipped into the cooler alongside store-bought beer. “Everyone was really impressed, so obviously we kept encouraging him to bring it to games,” Cam says with a smile. It’s worth noting too, that this is a group with sophisticated beer palates. Don, who co-owns the Biercraft group of Belgian- and craft-beer-focused restaurants with Dean, is a certified cicerone, the beer equivalent of a sommelier.

Bomber describes their origins story as “truly Canadian” – one of hockey, friendship and beer. This, and their retro aesthetics, will warm your insides almost as much as their reliable and scrumptious beer (of which there are many selections.) Their pilsner and ESB honour classic styles and taste profiles. Regularly rotating seasonal taps match what you’re most in the mood for – from grapefruit lager to amber ale.

You’ll find hockey, flannel and stubbies at this East Van tasting room founded by three long-time friends. The ESB, IPA, Pilsner, Blonde and all of Bomber Brewing’s beers are super drinkable with a satisfying rich texture. The old school branding and decor keep this microbrewery true to its roots. Pick up two growlers to go in a wooden to-go case.

Conveniently located on the traffic-calmed Adanac bike lane, this small brewery makes up in flavour what it lacks in space. Try a flight of their frequently rotating kegs alongside perennial favourites like their Bomber IPA, Bitter and Pilsner, and you’ll be glad you left your car at home.
