“There’s a song named Bump N Grind,” says Cheryl Wright, co-owner of one of East Vancouver’s hippest cafés, The Bump N Grind. “There used to be a DJ booth at the back,” she continues, “Music is really involved in the history of the space.”

Cheryl and her husband Kyle took over the Bump N Grind Café in 2011, but it has been a fixture on Commercial Drive since 2006. “Even though there’s no DJ booth anymore, our baristas make their own playlists and play their own music all the time,” adds Kyle.

Though the song Bump N Grind refers to a major Top 40 hit by R&B star R. Kelly, customers can expect to hear local indie bands playing over the airwaves when they visit the café.

Large windows, high ceilings and quirky Edison light bulbs make Bump n Grind’s Granville Street location a bright and airy space for creative thinking or catch-ups. The café is divided into two sections: the front area, near the windows, includes small tables for two people plus a window bar overlooking the street. The back of the café features one long table, often used for larger meetings or a shared workspace. With doors opening at 7:00 am on weekdays, and some of the best coffee in Fairview, this location will make your morning meetings much brighter.

Cool brews: Indie cafés for iced coffee in Vancouver

Cool brews: Indie cafés for iced coffee in Vancouver

Bump and Grind’s coffee program rotates weekly and showcases some of our favourite Vancouver coffee roasters, including Matchstick, Timbertrain and 49th Parallel. Bottles of cold brew from Notch Coffee or a made-to-order affogato are both easy-drinking options on a hot day. If you’re really breaking a sweat, grab a can of carbonated cold brew from Fernwood Coffee Company. These bubbly made with single origin coffees and filtered ice water for a crisp, naturally sweet finish. You’ll find Bump and Grind locations on Commercial Drive and South Granville.
