Meet the owner

Café Deux Soleils isn't just one of Commercial Drive's most happening social hubs — it's a neighbourhood institution. For more than 20 years, the restaurant has been delighting the Drive's artistic and Bohemian crowd (as well as anybody else who happens to stop by) with its laid-back vibe, hip staff and unpretentious vegetarian cuisine.

By day, it's a popular breakfast spot, featuring fresh-baked muffins, counter service, a towering chalkboard menu and a kids play area; it’s a place to enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat. By night, it plays host to a number of the Drive's most eclectic and best-attended events, including Monday Poetry Slams, “Hot Improv” Tuesdays and a Thursday night Open Mic — one of the longest-running in the city. And the neighbourhood connection doesn't end there: for decades the exterior has featured locally produced murals, and the interior walls regularly feature the work of local artists.

“The arts aspect of it is a no-brainer,” explains owner Jeff Maisonet. “This is an artistic community, and they need a place to go. To hang their pictures, play some music, eat some food. Have you seen these walls without art on them? They're just ugly, white walls. I could pretty them up with some paint, but there are just so many local artists out there looking to display their work and be seen.”

    Relaxed vegetarian favourite

You order at the counter and they bring your food to your bench. We got a light and delicious pecan muffin with strawberries, coconut, and cream banana. It was flavourful. We also enjoyed a tea latte as well as an Inka latte (which is a coffee substitute) and again delicious. For our mains we had the "Stella" and "Special" which one is a vegetarian eggs note with veggie ham. The flavours were great. Zesty and creamy, but the perfect balance. The other was scrambled eggs with a garlic/feta/tomato topping with marble rye toast. Very fresh and clean flavours.
