Meet the owner

What do you get when you cross more than three decades of combined experience on cruise ships, a truck stop diner from Winnipeg, and a tasty menu of homestyle cooking? Deacon's Corner, a neighbourhood staple in Gastown (with a second outpost now open in Kitsilano) serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that'll make you feel warm and fuzzy inside even on the greyest Vancouver day.

"All the problems we had to solve on cruise ships laid the foundation for this," says Brian Dsouza, co-owner of Deacon's Corner. He and business parter Chandrahaas (Chander) Pathak spent many years working aboard cruise ships all over the world, which helped prepare the duo for running a restaurant together. Brian and Chander took over Deacon's Corner in Gastown in 2009 from the previous owner,  who had opened it in honour of the original Deacon's Corner, a highway truckstop in Winnipeg.

When the Main Street diner changed hands in 2009, everyone agreed that it should maintain the flavour that made it a go-to for all types since its beginning in the Prairies. Brian and Chander have done just that; in fact, the opening of a second location in Kitsilano in 2014  is a good indicator that the duo has successfully stuck to the original concept while thriving in a new city.

8 Vancouver breakfast spots for perfect pancakes

Bordering on Vancouver's historic Gastown neighourhood, Deacon’s Corner is the original redux diner. They specialize in classic Southern-style diner food and all-day breakfasts. Since you'll be visiting for the pancakes, be sure to check out Deacon’s Carolina pulled pork pancakes – a must-try for any carnivorous pancake-lover. You get two giant buttermilk pancakes covered in their signature pulled pork, plus eggs any way you like them.

Must-try lunch spots in Vancouver's Railtown neighbourhood

Must-try lunch spots in Vancouver's Railtown neighbourhood

Hidden under building arches at the corner of Alexander and Main, Deacon’s Corner is a greasy spoon done right. Since 2009, the diner has been serving up comfort-food favourites, nosh on everything from cooked breakfasts to sandwiches to mac and cheese. Traditional diner decor – including vinyl booths and stools at the bar – makes for an unpretentious, welcoming experience. I recommend coming here for a grilled cheese and a beer, book in hand, to truly enjoy the homey ambiance when you need a treat.

Where to find hearty chili in Vancouver

Where to find hearty chili in Vancouver

Fans of old-school diner food will certainly be familiar with Deacon’s Corner. Both the Gastown and Kitsilano locations serve up big all-day breakfasts and calorie-rich comfort foods designed to stick to your ribs. The meaty menu includes a Southern-inspired beef chili (available by the cup or bowlful) made with slow-cooked beef and topped with sour cream and crispy tortilla chips. Want to ramp it up a notch? Try the beef chili fries and enjoy crispy fresh fries loaded up with this savoury meat stew. Did someone say hangover cure?
