Meet the owner

Much to diners' delights, Farmer’s Apprentice feels like it's literally attached to an organic farm — so effortlessly rustic is the decor and so fresh are the ingredients. Of course, there are no farms in South Granville, so the 30-seat bistro offers the next best thing: organic, local food in a relaxed, bohemian setting.

Taking the farm-to-table movement to the next level, head chef and owner Dave Gunawan purchases boxes of ingredients each week from local growers. He then does what rural folk have for centuries: he cooks with what the earth provides — and nothing more.

“It's based on what the farmers have to give us,” says Dave, who opened the restaurant in 2013 after cutting his teeth in prestigious kitchens around the globe. “We cook sensitively, based on the weather and our emotions,” he continues.

Top spots for Mother's Day brunch or dinner in Vancouver

Top spots for Mother's Day brunch or dinner in Vancouver

Brunch at highly acclaimed Farmer’s Apprentice will surely put a smile on Mom’s face this Mother’s Day. Possibly the only thing better might be their exclusive six-course ‘Just Like Mom’ dinner menu ($65), featuring gourmet takes on the restaurant team’s childhood favourites. Look for elevated yet nostalgic dishes such as meatloaf, Yorkshire pudding, raspberry ketchup and farmhouse cheddar sauce; vegetable lasagna; and pork chop with mushroom sauce, wild rose and chocolate cookies, and vanilla and tonka bean ice cream.

Vancouver’s top casual fine-dining restaurants

Nestled in the heart of South Granville, Farmer’s Apprentice feels as if it’s literally attached to a small organic greenhouse – that’s how fresh the produce tastes. Ethically sourced set menus (one veg, one meat) rotate daily and include anything from smoked trout to sprigs of thyme and spinach sprinkled over chilled soup or braised local meats. Eclectic and rustic decor and easy breezy wait staff only add to the effortless bohemian atmosphere.

A bohemian jewel tucked away in South Granville, Farmer’s Apprentice is a true locavore’s dream. Celebrated chef and owner David Gunawan creates seasonal farm-to-table cuisine that’s honest, creative and occasionally awe-inspiring. For Valentine’s Day, the kitchen will be serving a prix fixe “In Full Bloom” feast ($80 per person; $130 with wine pairings) with early and late seatings available on both Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14. The floral-themed tasting menu features six stunning courses – with distinct options for herbivores and omnivores – plus a different edible flower with each dish.
