Meet the owner

While Legato Tea and Coffee has had several small moves over the years, it’s long been a central part of the Kerrisdale commercial district. Winnie Chow has been part of Legato’s team ever since taking on a job with the business during her first year of study at UBC. Now the owner of the café, she speaks proudly about the dedicated clientele she’s seen grow over the years.

“We often have people waiting outside when we open up at seven in the morning,” she says. “We have a huge regular customer base. They’re people who live in the local area — usually seniors, but lately we’re seeing a lot of students coming in as well.” Winnie’s seen a lot of changes in Kerrisdale through the years, many of them quite recent. “There is a lot of construction, a lot of renovations, a lot of empty stores.”

The shifts in Vancouver’s real estate situation, with longtime residents being priced out and local businesses closing, has changed things for the little guys, those unique, locally minded establishments like Legato. But Winnie and her team are up to the challenge and they offer an intimate, homey environment of the type that commands loyalty.
