Meet the owner

For years, regular shoppers at Vancouver's beloved Neighbour menswear boutique had asked the team (or, rather, begged) to start carrying women’s clothing, too. Transcending such requests, the shop opened a stand-alone female counterpart, Neighbour / Woman, in 2015. Located on Powell Street, the second store's vision is much the same as the first’s, albeit more feminine: a less-is-more approach to clothing that prefers quality over quantity and timelessness over trends.

“We opened with a good core of brands, and have slowly added some that fit our vision,” says manager Karyna Schultz, who worked in New York and Paris before arriving at Neighbour / Woman. Karyna's focus is women’s clothing – from wool overcoats to plain tees and shift dresses – but, depending on the season, shoppers can also find ceramic bowls, leather backpacks, chunky textiles, simple purses, and cactus pots, among other treasures.

With a background in photography, art and design, Karyna frequently travels abroad to source diverse, forward-thinking pieces that create “a unique experience” for guests. “We try to bring in things that no one else has,” she says. Karyna is responsible for buying and sourcing alongside Saager Dilawri, the owner of both Neighbour / Woman and Neighbour.

Sister to the very successful Neighbour / Man, this Gastown boutique is owned by the same style mastermind, Saager X, who sources rare and/or acclaimed brands from his sporadic travels around the world. Included amongst his pared-down selection of Scandinavian-inspired womenswear are striking, one-of-a-kind dresses that are ideal for art gallery openings, job interviews or other occasions where the dress code is less Shopaholic, and more Gertrude Stein.

Women who once flocked to Neighbour in search of gifts for him will be even more pleased to learn its counterpart is located just steps away on Powell Street. Infused with a similar aesthetic and sensibility, this pretty yet stark boutique offers feminine Scandinavian clothing and accessories, as well as more garments, fragrances, and select home-wares from around the world. Tip: don’t arrive in a rush; the shop’s calming interior and idiosyncratic stock list are meant to be savoured.

Favouring European designers, you can find Neighbour's beautifully curated mens and womens boutiques just down the block from one another. These upscale spots definitely have a higher price point (think brands like Acne, Common Projects and Comme des Garcons), but it’s worth a turn around the gorgeous store to look for investment pieces.
