Meet the owner
Ever since Slickity Jim's Chat N' Chew first opened its doors back in 1997, it's been as much a restaurant as a community hub.
“We had people from all walks of life,” owner Mike Zalman recalls, of his original Powell Street location. “The prostitutes who worked on Kitty Row, then there was a trainyard behind the restaurant, so we'd get those guys. We'd get artists from the artist's loft on Powell. We had people who lived in condos. The restaurant became a focal point for the community.”
And now, more than 15 years later, despite increased competition, two location changes, and one devastating fire, Mike and his restaurant have continued to fill that role, providing the residents of Mount Pleasant with delicious breakfast choices, fresh ingredients, and a litany of live events in an unpretentious atmosphere.
“I like breakfast,” Mike says simply. “And I like the idea of using fresh, high-quality ingredients in what's essentially a roadside diner. My objective in creating Slickity Jim's was that it was always going to be a diner. “
