I know someone that used to work here. She told me that they make the servers clean the bathrooms in uniform before shift. If that doesn't say it all I don't know what does.

We used to go to The Reef quite often, the last couple times we've been there it has been awful. We had ox tail stew and goat curry from the commercial Drive location a few months ago and they were both bland. Last night we had the lamb shank special at the main street location and it was tough, poorly seasoned and inedible. We won't be going back.

Great Restaurant

I have lived near The Reef for a while, but just recently went there for the first time- and I don't know why I've waited this long! We just had appetizers and drinks but I can't wait to go back again for a full meal this time! The service was great- everyone was very inviting. One of the better restaurants in the Vancouver area.~Sarah D

Soggy Bread

I went to The Reef with a couple of friends after we took in a Vancouver Canadians baseball game. It's a fun atmosphere and the staff are really friendly, but the food was horrible. The restaurant and menu have a Jamaican theme to it and so we decided to try the pulled pork sandwiches with plantanes. Although the plantanes were great, the sandwich was horrible. The bun was completely soaked through when we got it, so we were forced to eat the pulled pork on it's own. Do they not own a toaster? Anyway, if you do go to this restaurant, I would stick with the simple pub fare and a few drinks.

Like being on vacation... only better!

Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at the Reef. I felt like I was back on vacation in the Carribean, except the food was better :) I had the "Jerk" burger (forget the real name), but it was a burger with Jamaican jerk seasoning - delicious! We brought our little one with us (20 months) and she DEVOURED the fresh plantain chips. Service was a little slow, considering it wasn't that busy, but I guess that is part of what made me feel like I was on vacation!!

Was there for Lunch in july, 2009. You won't be impressed by the dirty atmosphere, but the food is reasonably cheap. Given that there were few others in the restaurant when we were there, the food took inordinately long to prepare, but once it arrived it was cold. The Roti was a bad choice, but the dishes are served a la carte without fanfare. And while the food was bad, it was by no means disgusting. It almost was. Given the generally dirty atmosphere I didnt try the toilet. This one is probably not worth the visit. Sorry, West Indians...

I went with a friend coz she's into sampling different foods. We had one mishap after the other. First I lost my apetite after I saw how they handle food and cash all at the same time. Hand washing means nothing here. They touch the money, then punch the grimey cash, then touch your food, then bring the glass and never think twice about it. Second, and this is deliberate, they overcharged us. I called them on it and they didn't apologize. Just changed the bill. I suggest you memorize the prices and compare with the bill. Hope this helps

Not sure what the hub bub is on this place. I feel a bit duped. I won't be going back. I'm not sure the words "clean" and "West Indian" belong in the same sentence. For a Caribbean cuisine place, the last thing we need is the why-be-clean style restaurant experience (less is more?), when we barely have a decent regular place here in Vancouver to begin with. We only ordered two dishes, so I can only speak for those two. Nachos and a burrito (with green sauce). Nachos - they were tasty and an interesting recipe for sure. But Nachos with no cheese? The burrito was sans rice, and any sort of traditional side like beans. Open it up and oh and look, no cheese here either? (I saw the chef opening bags of it...so I'm sure they have some there somewhere) Big on cobwebs, small place to make it somewhat crowded. Noisy, and really...no cheese?

WORD OF WARNING to everyone: I witnessed the waiter drop the food, pick it up by the kitchen door when he thought no one saw him and deliver it. Unbelievable but then they managed to charge us more than the menu had stated and apologized by saying they will charge us what the menu says even though their prices have gone up and menu is wrong!! Crazy, dirty and not worth it at all.

Where to drink refreshing tropical cocktails in Vancouver

Where to drink refreshing tropical cocktails in Vancouver

The island vibes are seriously strong at The Reef, where Jamaican patties, jerk chicken wings, and calypso oxtail stew put Vancouverites in a tropical mood even on the greyest of days. Rum is the drink of choice behind the bar – of course – and there’s no better way to have it than served in a coconut shell. Mr. Gee’s Rude Bwoy is a Barbadian drink made with three ounces of dark rum, Triple Sec, Malibu, orange juice, grapefruit, pineapple, bitters and nutmeg. Or go for the OG Jamaican beach punch: a straightforward blend of dark and white rum and tropical juices.
