Meet the owner

The building at 209 East 6th Ave has been many different things over the past 100 years: a tannery, a custom sign store, a local art gallery, a coffee shop, and even (briefly) a residence.“The former owner used to live in the space,” chuckles owner Erv Salvador, “and because it's a commercial storefront, people used to open his front door and be like: 'Hey, is this a coffee shop?' So one day, he decided he'd start selling coffee. And then it was sandwiches, and from there it turned into a coffee shop, and then years later it turned into a restaurant.”

And now, nearly 20 years after it first opened, The Whip Restaurant and Gallery continues to make that space their own. Current owner Erv has transformed the venue into one of Mount Pleasant's best-known watering holes, serving craft beer, cocktails and sumptuous comfort-food-style entrees in a unique, cozy atmosphere.

“It's about listening to your clientele, and seeing what people want,” Erv says. “That's how we've been successful here: we've changed with the times...people really connect with this room. I can't tell you how many people in a week that will come in and be like: 'We had our first date here ten years ago'.”

Vancouver’s best veggie burgers

Vancouver’s best veggie burgers

Another craft beer pub with quality food to match its boozy offerings, The Whip’s veggie burger is described on the menu as “infamous” for good reason. The two-puck-size patty is made with beets, black beans and carrots, served with all the traditional trimmings and a sweet chili glaze. Best when paired with a patio and craft beer of choice.

Where to order wow-worthy chicken wings in Vancouver

This popular spot in the Mount Pleasant area is a beer destination, and what could be a better complement for wings? By focusing on local craft beers, the Whip has developed a reputation for serving the best the region has to offer. But back to the wings. Tucked in among the appetizers are some of the best chicken wings around. Using local organic and free range chicken, these wings come in a variety of flavours to suit your fancy.

Main squeeze: Little patios in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant

Main squeeze: Little patios in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant

On a warm spring or summer afternoon, The Whip is a great bet for a pint of cold beer and some healthy, pub-style food. Just off busy Main Street on 5th, the sun bathes this long, narrow patio in warmth and light till night falls. Nosh on an organic chicken Niçoise salad or one of the better veggie burgers in town and toast to the beginning of long summer evenings.
