Meet the owner

Even though “Uncle Abe” doesn't technically exist, Rachel Zottenberg has a solid idea of his personality.

“He's your cool uncle,” she laughs. “He's the guy who gave you your first beer. He lives in a one-bedroom apartment, either in the West End or Marpole...probably 1,500 square feet. He's got lots of cool stuff. Mom and Dad are like: 'I guess you can go over, but you can't stay overnight'.”

And if he existed, the Mount Pleasant bar that bears his name would surely make Uncle Abe proud. Since the summer of 2015, Main Street's own “Super Great Fun Times Spot” has excelled at offering mouthwatering shawarma and delicious cocktails in a comfortable, homey environment. The decor in particular is a visual treat: a collection of bizarre artwork, velvet paintings and curiosities sourced from antique stores around the Lower Mainland (there are even couches for those inclined toward some serious relaxation).

“We're pretty obsessed with the idea of how a room makes you feel,” Rachel explains. “Just as much as what you're being served. The room, lighting, sound...we believe that the whole ambience is important.”

The interior at this Main Street watering hole feels as though the cool kids took over your grandmother’s living room; shabby-chic curtains, well-worn furnishings and quirky artwork give the bar a lived-in vibe that makes everyone feel at home. Pitchers of sangria are ideal on the sun-soaked patio in summer, while a boozy Old Fashioned at the bar will warm your bones on a cold winter’s evening. You might come for Trivia Night, but you’ll stay for the expertly crafted cocktails and hearty plates of shawarma fries (courtesy of Mitra Canteen next door).

Mixed drinks meet Middle Eastern snacks at this new(ish) watering hole on Main Street. Delivering a super cozy vibe, the low-lit bar feels like a basement rec room with its lived-in floral couches and well-worn tables, Grab a table at Uncle Abe’s and order up falafels and grilled meats from Mitra Canteen next door. The hummus options are plentiful; try creamy chickpea dip on its own with pita, smothered in a wrap, or dolloped on a larger entrée plate paired with strips of tender beef, roasted lamb shank, spicy Moroccan chicken or with a medley of vegetables.

There is a gaping Rumpus Room-sized hole on Main Street where the Rumpus Room used to be. Seriously, it’s a pit in the ground where a condo will be built at some point. Luckily the people who brought you Rumpus Room opened up shop a few blocks south at a new spot. Named after the owner’s newborn son, Uncle Abe’s hosts Happy Hour from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, during which the oddly delicious Pickleback (shot of Jameson followed by a shot of pickle juice) and a rotating selection of cocktails are super cheap.
