It’s not the brace of glowing reviews from newspapers or even winning Best New Restaurant in the prestigious Vancouver Magazine awards which made Wildebeest’s co-owners Josh Pape and James Iranzad most proud of their first year in business together. “I was happiest when we won the Best New Design award,” confesses James. “We didn’t have a designer! It was all us and we were just super-proud of that.”

Their award-winning design showcases exposed brick and shared long table seating, and is softly lit by Edison bulbs hanging from ceiling-mounted pulleys. There’s an open kitchen at the heart of the restaurant and as you walk in there’s a handsomely stocked bar with inviting stools.

Both Josh and James were well known fixtures on the Vancouver bar and restaurant scene before they collaborated on their first project. Josh is the co-owner of the Diamond cocktail bar in the heart of Gastown and James owns Abigail’s Party in Kitsilano. Brought together by mutual friends and after “lots of poker games and trips to Portland” the two decided to work together after feeling that there was a gap in Vancouver’s restaurant scene. “We’d been out playing golf and wanted to eat delicious food, made with care in a room that wasn’t stuffy or sterile,” says Josh. “We also wanted to listen to great music and have great service. It seemed hard to pinpoint that so we decided to create it,” agrees James. And so, Wildebeest was born and opened for business in August 2012.
