I Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing

This was my first visit to Beaujena's after hearing about it from a friend, and it won't be my last. What a neat little place. It's not slick or shiek by any stretch but it is cozy and relaxing. The walls are painted a nice amber color and soft draperies cover the windows while billowy fabric covers the cieling. There are little Christmas lights bordering the room creating the impression of twinkling stars. Our dinner, which was to be a surprise, started with veal carpaccio with a grapefruit salad. I would never ever order carpaccio (uncooked meat) but found this very thinly sliced veal delicatlet seasoned with cumin, corianmder and celery seed to be surprisingly good. The grapefruit slad, citrusy and sweet played nicely off of the savory meat. Next up was a brie and spinach soup. Simple, creamy and oh so cheesy. Lots of places serve this but rarely does the brie flavor really pop. This was without question the best I've ever had. Then we had a lasagna made with sweet potatoes, bechemel and cheese. It sorted floated in a pool of sage butter. There were green peas in it too, which I don't actually like very much, but altogether it worked. It was mild in flavor and not too heavey. A Mediterranean baked fish with lemons and potatoes followed. There was Cod, Cuttlefish and some Swordfish included along with cubes of potato , onions and wedges of lemon. I think it was the combination of coriander, onion and the licorice flavor of the fennell seeds that made this dish so good. Beer braised beef brisket served with potato rudibaga puree and sauteed asparagus was the main meat dish and it did not disappoint. I have tried on numerous occassions to cook brisket and it always turns out tough but this one could be cut with a fork. There was dry prunes and apricots and sundried tomatoes in the au juice as well. The salad was a bit different. Thinly sliced cucumber encircled vinaigrette marinated mushrooms and tomatoes. The vinaigrette was prominent but not too sharp, allowing this salad to refresh the pallet rather than overwhelm it with a strong residual taste. Dessert was panicotta (cooked cream) with candied orange peels. Not too sweet, light and a perfect ending to what was a three-hour dining experience. We were served/ hosted by the owner, Beaujena, a wonderful woman who treated us like she really enjoyed having us in her establishment. Chef randy (Beaujena's husband) served dessert and personally thanked us for coming. Beaujena's is what dining out should be. It is as noteworthy for what it is not as for what it is. Pampering but not overbearing service. Outstanding food, delicately seasoned served in reasonable portions, rather than the usual over-salted slab of meat and potatoes designed to stuff you full. Beaujena's is not cheap but it is great value. The two of us had seven courses and a flight of five wines for $165 including taxes. I'll definately go there again. I loved it.

I had been to Beaujena's before ,when it had a menu and specialized in steaks and it was good then. But now that they have dropped the menu and gone to the fixed menu/fixed price format, they are outstanding. We had heard from friends that it was good but, wow! We had the seven-course surprise dinner and not a single course was disappointing. The starter consisted of three small hor d'ouvres - one was a maple glazed salmon devilled egg, the second was a sun dried tomato and salmon mousse on a slice of cucumber and the thirs was a piece of smoked salmon on toast with capers and red onion. Thesecond course was a roasted potato leak soup served with slices of pumpkin bacquette and maple butter. For the third course we were served two chicken drummettes that had been frenched (making them look like lolipops) in a ginger lemon sauce. That came with polenta French Fries seasoned with salt, coriander and cumin. This whole dish worked so well together with the strong spices complimenting rather than competing with each other. The fourth course was a pasta dish - linguini with a sauce consisting of tomatoes and duck meat. This was truly unique for me. My previous experience with duck was either with orange sauce or Chinese style Peking Duck. It's a mild flavor that mingled with the tomato and pasta really well. The pasta, by the way, was made with pumpkin. The fifth course, sort of a main course I guess, was a beef bougignon with mashed potatoes. Nothing surprising here as this is a pretty classic French dish and it was done well. It kind of suited the fall weather as it is like comfort food. The next course was a salad.with spinach pears and blue cheese. There were walnuts too, which gave the whole thing an added dimension of texture to go with the opposing sweetness of pears and salty blue cheese. Dessert was the best tiramisu I've ever had. Bar none. Three of us had the wine pairing (five differant wines) and all were really well matched to the food. Altogether we were there for about three and a half hours. The owner served us and had us laughing and kidding with her most of the time. We never felt rushed at any point. the chef (the owner's husband) came out and met us and answered our questions. Our total bill was well under $100 per person including a generous tip. Our group is thinking of making Beaujena's a regular once a month date.

Beaujena's Surprising Delicious

I recently visited Beaujena's restaurant in St. Boniface three other friends. I hadn't realized that the old Red Lantern had been replaced by this surprisingly cozy and upscale restaurant more than two years ago. We ordered the seven course surprise dinner which featured the wines and cuisine of South America. Apparently the regional theme changes each month. What a delightful surprise it was. From the goucho steak (which also appears on the regulasr menu) to the cheese and sweet potato dessert, this meal which was paired with five different wines took us on a culinary adventure to a region I had never even considered visiting. I would most heartily recommend the restaurant and the seven course surprise to anyone who really enjoys the experience of dining out.
