Bad!

I have been a regular at this restaurant for four years and now it has got to be the worst! Ever since the management/owners changed, it's gotten so bad! The quality of the food, the portion, the service, everything else is going downhill! My boyfriend and I ordered a bunch of rolls, but it took a very long time despite it wasn't busy at the restaurant. I always knew ta-ke is known to drown their rolls in sauces but I was fine with it, now they are just overdoing it! The taste of the ingredients in the rolls are covered by the taste of the sauces. And perhaps it's the expectations of the new owners, one of these new waitresses asked to refill my tea every 5 minutes it was SO annoying. We didn't want to be rude so we just laughed it off. The new management/owners are not as friendly as the Kims and I think I am probably not returning again.

BEST SUSHI RESTAURANT IN KINGSTON

The sushi here is AMAZING. The fish is so fresh, and the rice is not too clumped and in excess. I've gone many times with my friends, and my family goes here every time they visit kingston. We all agree that the spicy salmon is our favourite. I've searched everywhere for the same spicy salmon in toronto, and i still havent found it. The staff is really friendly and sushi chefs and manager always greet us with enthusiasm! I totally recommend this place to anyone who wants a really good sushi fix in kingston.

Not good value

Small serving size, lots of rice, not much fish. If you are on or near Princess Street and don't know which sushi place to go, well, don't go here; go to another one and maybe you'll have better food and nicer servers. Waste of money.

Being a Queen's student for the sixth year now,Ta Ke has never been a new sushi joint to me. As a native Toronto resident, the quality of sushi that you get at this restaurant is average and quite overpriced. But what the hey, you expect to pay a lot more for ethnic dishes in Kingston anyway, so it has never been much of an issue. I recently revisited Ta Ke with my boyfriend... And as we were deciding on what to order, he notices that the sign outside says that the daily special for a sushi/sashimi lunch is $11, $4 cheaper than the usual menu. As we contemplated on getting it, the server overheard us and told us that it was exactly the same as shown in the menu, just cheaper. So we asked for a couple more minutes, to which another server came by, where I turned around and pointed at the sign outside and said I wanted two of the daily lunch specials. I must say, the presentation of the food was a amazing, but the salmon sashimi was off - there was a strong fishy stench to it, which is usually a sign that the fish isn't fresh. When the bill came, we were charged the menu price, and of course, when we asked the server who took our hour, she said, "Apparently, it's only Monday to Thursday", and it was Friday. She was unapologetic, so my boyfriend walked to the front of the store to look at sign, and it did, in fact, say Monday to Thursday. Unfortunately, at the height of where my boyfriend and I were sitting when we ordered, we couldn't see it. Personally, I was outraged because we referred to the sign twice to TWO different servers and neither of them mentioned that the special was unavailable. Anyway, my boyfriend just paid for it, seeing as how we couldn't argue because the sign did indeed state the days. But I thought it was just REALLY shady that they would trick their customers that way.

My first time coming here, and it won't be my last! Went with a group of friends and we all left satisfied.... service was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, thoroughly explaining any questions we had, and very friendly! The decor and atmosphere is amazing... it may not look like much on the outside, but it is truly one of the better looking restaurants on the inside. I ordered the chicken yaki udon for myself, and it was bubbling when i came out.. presentation was excellent! Tasted even better... portions were generous and i left full. My friends all got sushi and were very happy with what they had. I'd definitely recommend this place!!

Our place to go to for sushi in Kingston. We almost always order the same thing...the Ta-Ke sushi platter and have not been disappointed. Tried the Sashimi platter once but realized we don't like fish without rice. Would like to try some Korean dishes but wouldn't know what to order and since we go to Ta-Ke because we're in the mood for sushi that is what we get. BTW, we've never been sick after eating here, unlike some other reviewers' experience.

Really the best sushi in kingston, and for a long time at that. The menu is quite varied, you sure don't have to just have sushi, the Korean dishes are excellent too.

okay food, good service, a little expensive

I went to ta-ke about a week ago I think, and I've been wanting to write a review so here I finally am.. Like my title says, the food was okay, pretty decent, but a little on the expensive side (which is understandable since they can put any price they want since they barely have any competition). [and therefore a lot cheaper in toronto since there is so much competition]. the service was really good though.. have to give them that.. the girls were really friendly and quick. tea and water right when we sat down.. pretty quick ordering, and food came out relatively fast for a busy night. there was one thing that caught my attention though. While I was eating, I was also just looking around and watching their staff. I noticed that a young guy, probably the owner's son (sinced he was dressed differently from the waiters) was pretty much doing nothing at all! haha, everybody was busy taking orders, bringing food, tea, water, drinks, appetizers, bustling around, and even both parents were busy helping, but the owner's son was pretty much just walking around and pointing around and trying to direct things but all he seemed to manage to do was keep getting in all of the waitresses' ways . haha pretty useless! i just thought it was funny to see that and point that out. oh yeah, i should probably say something about the actual food too haha.. so i ordered the yukae jang and its supposed to be a stew with beef, but it had a really small portion of meat in it. it was mostly just the soup that deceives you into thinking that its a big portion. the gyoza were oK, and the giant maki was good.

delectable dining

I like the location, it's downtown and it's great to stop in after shopping for a while. Atmosphere is relaxed but very inviting, the sushi chef will always make eye contact to see how you are enjoying your food. The waitresses are all very kind and helpful if your not sure what you would like today. Probably the nicest downtown sushi digs, but with an impressive cooked menu for those ill at ease. Definitely stop in if you are in the area. It's not outrageous prices and there's something for everyone. One day I plan on getting one of the sushi boats... one day.

Terrible Service

The food at Ta Ke remains average for a low-priced sushi restaurant, although prices have gone up here in the past few years. There are only a half-dozen or so sushi options in Kingston, but this one is now off my list. We experienced terrible service here, the worst we have had in several years. Our waitress did not listen to our ordering, did not listen to our corrections when she read back what we wanted, brought us the wrong dish (ebi instead of amiebi) and then argued with us that the ebi was the only shrimp on the menu, and that their "standards require that we cook all shrimp" First item on the sushi list, amaebi aka sweet shrimp aka raw shrimp. A complaint to the manager brought an apology along the lines of it was all your fault you made me mess up. Completely ruined the dinner, and any chances of us returning.

The prices are slightly cheaper than your average...

The prices are slightly cheaper than your average Korean-Japanese restaurant and the service is very fast and efficient. The menu is flexible and substitutions are generally made free of charge in instances where I've seen other resteraunts charge. Portion sizes are reasonable. Parking is a little tough and you may have to walk a few blocks to get to it. The restaurant is clean, bright and informal. There is quite a bit left to be desired in the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Considering what is available locally, there could definitely be an improvement. However, TA-KE does not try to be a "high-end" restaurant so you definitely get what you pay for. You CAN certainly count on fast, friendly service, decent food and decent prices. The speed of service is probably the most memorable thing about this restaurant.

I have been going to Ta-ke for just over a year now and I have to say that I am addicted. Going to school in London, On I have yet to find a sushi place here that even compares to Ta-ke. Since I am a regular, I am treated as royalty. The owners know and appreciate my business and teh chefs and staff always greet me and wave and say hello as soon as I walk into the restaurant. By far my FAVOURITE place to eat in Kingston and I have had nothing but deliciousness from them. MUST TRY: -Blue Mountain -Spicy Salmon Maki -Dynamite Maki (my favourite) -Chicken Teriyaki (sooo good!) and always ask for Mr.Lee's suggestions (He is the main chef who will always make you something good!)

As a korean, I can say that the food at Ta-Ke is completely lackluster and severely overpriced - for their Korean entrees at least. The portions are small and the taste not so great, but people have no choice but to go back because there's really no other choice if you want some Korean/Japanese food. As a rule I avoid the Sushi there, not because I dislike it, but because on more than one occasion I've had good reason to be suspicious of the fresh factor. Ta-Ke probably won't go out of business right now because there's really no competition, but if someone were to set up another Jap/Korean restaurant with even a smidgen more flavour and better deal, Ta-Ke'd be in serious trouble.

TaKe is one of the best places to eat in downtown...

TaKe is one of the best places to eat in downtown Kingston -- that isn't to say it's a great restaurant, just good, and consistently much better than the majority of the lame offerings here. Generally speaking, I would say their Korean dishes are superior to their Japanese -- the stews in particular (champong, soon tofu) are quite flavourful and filling. I'm not a bebimbap fan myself, but friends who have spent plenty of time in Korea report that TaKe's dish is pretty good for Canada. And you can't go wrong with the complimentary ban chaan that comes with Korean dishes. Very nice. The sushi is hit and miss, and never is it an artform like in some places. When it's good it hits the spot... when it's bad, it's poorly-formed maki rolls that are falling apart and nigiri with small slices of fish on crudely-huge slabs of white rice.
