FINALLY -- A GREAT INDIAN MEAL

What a great first time at Raja. The atmosphere is clean and crisp unlike some Indian places in town. The servers were super -- very friendly and helpful. The butter chicken, chicken tikki, naan, chickpeas were all fantastic and spiced so well it was a treat for the tastebuds! The portions were large and the bill was very fair. We were all given complimentary desserts as it was our first time there -- fresh shebert! We were all very impressed -- everything was spiced right and perfectly cooked. If you want Indian food you want Raja!

Really? $3 for a piece of Naan? I've gone to other Indian places and ordered 3x the food for the same price, that was just as good if not better tasting. Service was polite, but not good. Had to flag someone down for the bill, after sitting for 15 minutes after we had put our coats on. You are definitely paying for the decor.

    Attractive Exterior

Drawn by many recommendations, I approached an impressive entrance with anticipation. Passing through two dark doors into the reception area, I noticed one server sitting at one table and two others standing by the bar, all with an expression of annoyed surprise - was I late? It was only 1:30 PM. I was seated without a word, given ample time to look at the menu, then before I had ordered, asked if I would like wine! Finally, I ordered Chicken Madras and a glass of Pinot Noir - unfortunately I was brought an obvious Pinot Gris, which was replaced. Both the food and wine were excellent, not that the server was aware of it because he was never seen until the meal was finished ... and did not waste a second in clearing the table. Before my meal ended, I was annoyed by another server making much noise resetting tables, dropping silverware, etc. in the process. I experienced a strong feeling of poor labour ethics from beginning to end. A total of 45 minutes. When calculating the tip, I made sure that it was not based on a sum that included the HST (Revenue Canada has enough, thank you).

    Wow, tasty!

Friends, who are indian, suggested this place to us. We were happy we tried as it was some of the best food in the city we have tasted and we've become new fans. The decor is upscale, mix between modern and ethnic. Servers are friendly and attentive, you get a mix of several people serving you when there, not just one person. Food came a bit too quickly for our liking, which made us feel a bit rushed. The dinner started with papadoms that were perfectly cooked, not greasy, crispy and tasty. Tried the mixed platter and everything was amazing, crispy, hot and delish. Naan was soft with a crispy, chewy texture. Chicken tikka, madras lamb, and beef vindaloo were both flavourful, spiced well, and meat was moist and tender. The basmati rice, again perfectly cooked. Ended with chai which was excellent. We were impressed with this place and have returned often since. It doesn't offer large portions, so, if you are looking for that you will be diappointed. However, food is well done, service is very good, and ambiance nice.
